Surveying Vertical Curves When a road is being built, it usually has straight sections, all with the same grade, that must be linked to each other by curves. (By this we mean curves up and down rather than side to side, which would be another matter.) It’s important that as the road changes from one grade to another, the rate of change of grade between the two be constant. The curve linking one grade to another grade is called a vertical curve.
Surveyors mark distances by means of stations that are
Here
Figure 5.72
Assume that the vertical curve you want to design goes over a slight rise, joining a straight section of grade
a. What is the equation for the vertical curve described above? Don’t round the coefficients.
b. What are the elevations of the stations for the vertical curve?
c. Where is the highest point of the road on the vertical curve? (Give the distance along the vertical curve and the elevation.)

- The following problems review material we covered in Section 3.5. Linear Velocity A point moving on the circumference of a circle covers 5 feet every 20 seconds. Find the linear velocity of the point.arrow_forwardLife Expectancy Versus Health Care Spending One article shows a relationship between per capita health care spending h, in thousands of U.S. dollars per person per year, and life expectancy E, in years. The following formula is adapted from that article: E=72.23+3.85h0.37h2 We should point out that this article includes no justification for the type of model used. a.Plot the graph E versus h. Include spending levels from 1000 to 9000 per person per year so a horizontal span of 1 to 9. b. According to this model, what health care expenditure corresponds to maximum longevity? Round your answer in thousands of dollars per person per year to two decimal places. c.What optimum life expectancy is given by this model? For comparison, in 2011, in the United States, per capita health care spending was 8745 and life expectancy was 78.7 years.arrow_forwardConstant Velocity When the graph of directed distance is a straight line, what can be said about the graph of velocity?arrow_forward
- Earthquake the graph shows the vertical acceleration of the Ground from the 1994 Northridge earthquake in Los Angles, as measured by a seismograph. (Here t represents the time in seconds.) (a) At what time t did the earthquake first make noticeable movement of the Earth? (b) At what time t did the earthquakes seem to end? (c) At what time t was the maximum intensity of the earthquake list reachedarrow_forwardContinuation of Exercise S-9 If you move 5 additional feet west, what is the height of the roof above the place where you stand? S-9. Slope from Two Points Take west to be the positive direction. The height of a sloped roof above the place where you stand is 12 feet see Figure 3.28). If you move 3 feet west, the height is 10 feet. What is the slope?arrow_forwardImmigration The following graph shows immigrationin thousand to the United States has varied over the past century. Source: Homeland Security. a. Find the average annual rate of change in immigration for the first half of the century from 1905 to 1955. b. Find the average annual rate of change in immigration for the second half of the century from 1955 to 2005. c. Find the average annual rate of change in immigration for the entire century from 1905 to 2005. d. Average your answers to part a and b, and compare the result with your answer from part c. Will these always be equal for any two time periods? e. If the annual average rate of change for entire century continues, predict the number of immigrants in 2009. Compare answer to the actual number of 1,130,818 immigrants.arrow_forward
