According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), the motors can operate satisfactorily with the deviation in the supply voltage of ±10% over the rated voltage or full-load voltage. As per NEC, the allowable frequency is ±5% over the name plate frequency.

If the motor’s name plate voltage is 220 V, then the range of the motor’s operating voltage is 198 volts to 242 volts. In other words, the voltage below 198 volts is considered as low voltage to the motor and the voltage above 242 volts is considered as over voltage to the motor
