Chapter 6, Problem 24P
A bar of steel has the minimum properties Se = 40 kpsi, Sy = 60 kpsi. and Sut = 80 kpsi. The bar is subjected to a steady torsional stress of 15 kpsi and an alternating bending stress of 25 kpsi. Find the factor of safely guarding against a static failure, and either the factor of safety guarding against a fatigue failure or the expected life of the part. For the fatigue analysis use:
- (a) Modified Goodman criterion.
- (b) Gerber criterion.
- (c) ASME-elliptic criterion.
6-24 Repeat Prob. 6-20 but with an alternating torsional stress of 15 kpsi and a steady bending stress of 15 kpsi.

Calculate the alternating component of the normal stress (in MPa). (If there is no alternating component of the normal stress, enter "0" in the answer box)
The stepped and surface-ground steel bar in the figure is subjected to a bending moment varying between Mz=100 Nm and Mz=250 Nm and a torsional moment varying between Tx=80 Nm and Tx=320 Nm in opposite directions. The tensile strength of the rod material is Sut=800 MPa and it works under room conditions. For 50 percent reliability, check the fatigue safety of the rod.
