Concept explainers
a.
Whether the ball will land in in front of, behind, or in the hand.
a.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
When an object has tendency to resist any change in its velocity (speed or direction), it is called inertia of motion. The object keeps moving if it is moving and remains at rest if it is at rest.
On tossing a ball straight up in the air from a car which is moving with constant velocity, the ball will land in hand because the person and the ball will move with the same speed by which the car is moving.
On throwing the ball up,the ball has inertia of motion so it will fall in the hand.
b.
To discuss; Landing of ball if car is moving on curve.
b.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
When an object has tendency to resist any change in its velocity (speed or direction), it is called inertia of motion. The object keeps moving if it is moving and remains at rest if it is at rest.
As car is moving at constant speed on a round curve. The ball is also at the same speed of car. On throwing the ball straight up it will move tangentially due to its inertia.
So, the ball will fall besides the car, towards the outside of the curve.
