Chapter 6.1, Problem 83E
In Exercises 83 and 84, assume that type A cicada has a 10-year cycle and type B cicada has a 12-year cycle.
Redo Exercise 81 using the given assumptions.
81. Cicadas. In addition to avoiding their predators, another advantage of the 13- and 17-year emergence pattern for cicadas is that the two species rarely emerge during the same year to compete for food. Suppose that type A cicada has a 13-year emergence cycle and type B cicada has a 17-year cycle. If both type A and type B cicadas emerged during 2010, when is the next time that both cicadas will emerge during the same year?

An advantage of different emergence patterns for two species of a swarming insect is that they rarely emerge the same year to compete for food. Suppose that type A of the insect has a 5-year emergence cycle and type B of the insect has a 19-year cycle. If both species of the insect emerged during 2011 , when is the next year that both species will emerge during the same year?
Consider a production system composed of two machines, where only one machine needs to be operational at any given time. The breakdown probability of any operational machine on any given day is 0.2. In case of a machine failure, the production is stopped for the day, and is resumed the next day with the other machine (if available). The repair job of the failed machine also starts the next day. It takes two days to repair a machine, and both machines can be repaired simultaneously.1) Define the state space and draw the state transition diagram.2) Starting with two available machines at the beginning of the first day, what is the probability that both machines are unavailable at the end of the 3rd day?3) In the long run, what is the ratio of the days that both machines are unavailable?
A company has three machines, A, B, and C, that are each capable of producing a certain item. However, because of a lack of skilled operators, only two of the machines can be used simultaneously. The following table indicates production over a three-day period, using various combinations of the machines. How long would it take each machine, if used alone, to produce 1000 items?

- Solve the following System (in picture) with Gauss Jordan Elimination.arrow_forwardSuppose a company charges a premium of $150 per year for an insurance policy for storm damage to roofs. Actuarial studies show that in case of a storm, the insurance company will pay out an average of $8000 for damage to a composition shingle roof and an average of $12,000 for damage to a shake roof. They also determine that out of every 10,000 policies, there are 7 claims per year made on composition shingle roofs and 11 claims per year made on shake roofs. What is the company’s expected value (i.e., expected profit) per year of a storm insurance policy? What annual profit can the company expect if it issues 1000 such policies? Determine the probability of a composition shingle roof claim out of 10,000 = ______ Determine the probability of a shake roof claim out of 10,000 = ______ How many claims are made out of 10,000? = _______ What is the probability of no claims out of 10,000? = _______ How much does each shingle roof claim cost the company, don’t forget each person pays $150…arrow_forwardA research Development department at Oda manufacturing company determines that 20% of people who purchase their products during any given month will not purchase the next month. She randomly assigned newborn rats from a highly inbred line to one of three diets: (1) unlimited access to food, (2) 90% of the amount of food that a rat of that size would normally eat, (3) 80% of the amount of food that a rat of that size would normally eat. She maintained the rats on the three diets throughout their lives and recorded their life spans (in years).
