To determine the number of friends invited by Tamera and Adelina

Tamera invited 21 friends while Adelina invited 26 friends.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Tamera invited 5 fewer friends than Adelina.

And, They both invited a total of 47 friends together.

Calculation:

Let,

The total number of friends invited by Tamera be x

The total number of friends invited by Adelina be y.

Tamera invited 5 fewer friends than Adelina, which means,

$x-y=-5$

And, They both invited a total of 47 friends together,which means,

$x+y=47$

Let the equation,

$x-y=-\mathrm{5.......}(i)$

$x+y=\mathrm{47.......}(ii)$

Now, add equation ( i ) and equation ( ii ),

$\begin{array}{l}\Rightarrow (x-y)+(x+y)=-5+47\\ \Rightarrow x-y+x+y=42\\ \Rightarrow 2x=42\\ \Rightarrow x=21\end{array}$

Now, substitute the value of x in equation ( i ),

$\begin{array}{l}\Rightarrow 21+y=47\\ \Rightarrow y=26\end{array}$

Conclusion:

Therefore, the numbers of friends invited by Tamera and Adelina were 21 and 26 respectively.
