Substitution is sometimes more helpful than elimination and viceversa.
Substitution is useful when the coefficient of one of the variables is one. Since the variable can be written in terms of the other where it can bring out solutions easily. Also, if a coefficient can be reduced to 1 without making the other coefficients to fractions.
In other cases, elimination is more useful because it avoids turning out coefficients into fraction when solving the system of equations.
