Vasquez and Redner mention a highly simplified model of political opinion dynamics. It consists of a population of leftists, rightists, and centrists. The leftist and rightists never talk to each other but they do talk to centrists. When an extremist of either type talks with a centrist, one of them convinces the other to change his mind, with the winner depending on the sign of the parameter r. If

- Cholesterol Cholesterol in human blood is necessary, but too much can lead to health problems. There are three main types of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoproteins), LDL (low-density lipoproteins), and VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). HDL is considered “good” cholesterol; LDL and VLDL are considered “bad” cholesterol. A standard fasting cholesterol blood test measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These numbers are used to estimate LDL and VLDL, which are difficult to measure directly. Your doctor recommends that your combined LDL/VLDL cholesterol level be less than 130 milligrams per deciliter, your HDL cholesterol level be at least 60 milligrams per deciliter, and your total cholesterol level be no more than 200 milligrams per deciliter. (a) Write a system of linear inequalities for the recommended cholesterol levels. Let x represent the HDL cholesterol level, and let y represent the combined LDL VLDL cholesterol level. (b) Graph the system of inequalities from part (a). Label any vertices of the solution region. (c) Is the following set of cholesterol levels within the recommendations? Explain. LDL/VLDL: 120 milligrams per deciliter HDL: 90 milligrams per deciliter Total: 210 milligrams per deciliter (d) Give an example of cholesterol levels in which the LDL/VLDL cholesterol level is too high but the HDL cholesterol level is acceptable. (e) Another recommendation is that the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol be less than 4 (that is, less than 4 to 1). Identify a point in the solution region from part (b) that meets this recommendation, and explain why it meets the recommendation.arrow_forwardAs the price of oil rises, there is increased worldwide interest in alternate sources of energy. The Financial Times/Harris Poll surveyed people in six countries to assess attitudes toward a variety of alternate forms of energy. In the study, thebirds were tested in a box with two chambers andwere free to move from one chamber to another. Inone chamber, two large eye-spots were painted onone wall. The other chamber had plain walls. Theresearcher recorded the amount of time each birdspent in the plain chamber during a 60-minute session.Suppose the study produced a mean of M = 34.5 minutes on the plain chamber with SS = 210 for a sample of n = 15 birds. (Note: If the eye spots have no effect, then the birds should spend an average of μ = 30minutes in each chamber.)a. Is this sample sufficient to conclude that the eyespots have a significant influence on the birds’behavior? Use a two-tailed test with α = .05.b. Compute the…arrow_forward
- III. A researcher is interested in what type of bait attracts the most moths. The number of moths in a trap was recorded for traps that were in different locations, and used different baits. The data is in the file Trap.csv, with the following columns: Column 1. Moths: The number of moths in the trap Column 2. Location: The location of the trap on a tree Top, Middle, Lower, Ground. - Column 3. Bait: Chemical The bait used - Scent, Sugar, (a) Plot the interaction plot. Does there appear to be an interaction effect? Explain your answer. (b) Find the group means for Location. (c) Find the group means for Bait. (d) Find the group means for all treatment levels. (e) Do you believe that the number of moths trapped is different for all Locations? Explain.arrow_forwardIn a study, the effects of the mane of a male lion as a signal of quality to mates and rivals was explored. Four life-sized dummies of male lions provided a tool for testing female response to the unfamiliar lions whose manes varied by length (long or short) and color (blonde or dark). The female lions were observed to see whether they approached each of the four life-sized dummies. Complete parts (a) through (e) below. a. Identify the experimental units. Choose the correct answer below. The female lions The male dummies The mane colors The mane lengths Part 2 b. Identify the response variable. Choose the correct answer below. A. Whether or not (yes or no) the mane length affected how the female lions reacted to a male dummy. B. Whether or not (yes or no) the female lions approached the same dummies. C. Whether or not (yes or no) the female lions approached a male dummy. D. Whether or not…arrow_forwardThe aim of this prac is to practice data gathering. Assume that you have been employed to improve the user experience of an interactive product such as a smartphone app, a digital media player, a Blu-ray player, computer software, or some other type of technology (you choose anything you can easily observe with the people around you). This existing product may be redesigned, or a completely new product may be created. To do the assignment, find a group of people or a single individual prepared to be the user group. These could be your family, friends, peers, or people in a local community group. For this assignment: Identify the product here: [1] Clarify the basic goal of improving the product by considering what this means in your circumstances. The conclusion was based largely on a survey several years prior in which approximately 38,000 registered voters were asked both whether they voted and whether they were citizens. A total of 339 of those surveyed reported being noncitizens, and a total of 48 of these people also said they voted. Complete parts (a) through (d) below. Based on the survey, what percentage of noncitizens claim to have voted? One difficulty with any survey is response error, in which, for example, people accidentally check the wrong box. Suppose that the response error rate for this survey was only 0.1%, meaning that 99.9% of those surveyed answered the survey questions accurately. How many people would have answered the citizenship question incorrectly? Assume that the result from part (b) represents citizens who accidentally said they were noncitizens when they were citizens, and that all these…arrow_forward
