Interpretation:
The changes in the atomic size of copper atom and silver atom during the given reaction are to be described.
Concept Introduction:
The number of protons in the nucleus must be the same as the total electrons present in a neutral atom.
A cation is formed by removing the electrons, so the force experienced by the remaining electrons increases. Hence, the cation formed from an atom must be smaller in size than that of a neutral atom of an element.
The force of the nucleus felt by electrons decreases in an anion because of which the size of the anion is larger than that of the neutral atom of an element.
