Chapter 7, Problem 20RQ

What makes the Earth round?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

The reason for the round shape of the Earth.

Answer to Problem 20RQ

The shape of the Earth is round due to the force of gravity.

Explanation of Solution

The mass of every particle exerts the gravitational force and the nature of this force is attractive. Every particle in the space attracts the other particles.

The mass of every part of the Earth attracts the objects towards the center of the Earth. The round shape of the Earth is due to the gravitational pull of every part of the Earth on the other part. The force of gravity balances the effect of one part by the effect of the other part, so the Earth takes the rounded shape to balance the gravity force of every part completely.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the shape of the Earth is round due to the force of gravity.
