Chapter 7, Problem 7.32E
Price and efficiency variances, benchmarking. Nantucket Enterprises manufactures insulated cold beverage cups printed with college and corporate logos, which it distributes nationally in lots of 12 dozen cups. In June 2017, Nantucket produced 5,000 lots of its most popular line of cups, the 24-ounce lidded tumbler, at each of its two plants, which are located in Providence and Amherst. The production manager, Shannon Bryant, asks her assistant, Joel Hudson, to find out the precise per-unit budgeted variable costs at the two plants and the variable costs of a competitor, Beverage Mate, who offers similar-quality tumblers at cheaper prices. Hudson pulls together the following information for each lot:
- 1. What is the budgeted variable cost per lot at the Providence Plant, the Amherst Plant, and at Beverage Mate?
Required
- 2. Using the Beverage Mate data as the standard, calculate the direct materials and direct manufacturing labor price and efficiency variances for the Providence and Amherst plants.
- 3. What advantage does Nantucket get by using Beverage Mate’s benchmark data as standards in calculating its variances? Identify two issues that Bryant should keep in mind in using the Beverage Mate data as the standards.

- Ed Co. manufactures two types of O rings, large and small. Both rings use the same material but require different amounts. Standard materials for both are shown. At the beginning of the month, Edve Co. bought 25,000 feet of rubber for $6.875. The company made 3,000 large O rings and 4,000 small O rings. The company used 14,500 feet of rubber. A. What are the direct materials price variance, the direct materials quantity variance, and the total direct materials cost variance? B. If they bought 10,000 connectors costing $310, what would the direct materials price variance be for the connectors? C. If there was an unfavorable direct materials price variance of $125, how much did they pay per toot for the rubber?arrow_forwardBuenolorl Company produces a well-known cologne. The standard manufacturing cost of the cologne is described by the following standard cost sheet: Management has decided to investigate only those variances that exceed the lesser of 10% of the standard cost for each category or 20,000. During the past quarter, 250,000 four-ounce bottles of cologne were produced. Descriptions of actual activity for the quarter follow: a. A total of 1.35 million ounces of liquids was purchased, mixed, and processed. Evaporation was higher than expected. (No inventories of liquids are maintained.) The price paid per ounce averaged 0.42. b. Exactly 250,000 bottles were used. The price paid for each bottle was 0.048. c. Direct labor hours totaled 48,250, with a total cost of 733,000. Normal production volume for Buenolorl is 250,000 bottles per quarter. The standard overhead rates are computed by using normal volume. All overhead costs are incurred uniformly throughout the year. (Note: Round unit costs to the nearest cent and total amounts to the nearest dollar.) Required: 1. Calculate the upper and lower control limits for materials and labor. 2. Compute the total materials variance, and break it into price and usage variances. Would these variances be investigated? 3. Compute the total labor variance, and break it into rate and efficiency variances. Would these variances be investigated?arrow_forwardThe Chocolate Cow Ice Cream Company has grown substantially recently, and management now feels the need to develop standards and compute variances. A consulting firm was hired to develop the standards and the format for the variance computation. One standard in particular that the consulting firm developed seemed too excessive to plant management. The consulting firm’s standard was production of 100 gallons of ice cream every 45 minutes. The plant’s middle level of management thought the standard should be 100 gallons every 55 minutes, while the top management of the company thought that the consulting firm’s standard would provide more motivation to the employees. Why is the company establishing a standard for production? What are some factors the company may need to consider before selecting one of the proposed standards?arrow_forward
- Comprehensive Variance Analysis Marvel Parts Inc. manufactures auto accessories. One of the company’s products is a set of seat covers that can be adjusted to fit nearly any small car. The company uses a standard cost system for all of its products. According to the standards that have been set for the seat covers, the factory should work 2,850 hours each month to produce 1,900 sets of covers. The standard costs associated with this level of production are: During August, the factory worked only 2,800 direct labor-hours and produced 2,000 sets of covers. The following actual costs were recorded during the month. At standard, each set of covers should require 5.6 yards of material. Lockit is considering the use of simple (single-driver) and multiple regression analyses to forecast annual sales because previous forecasts have been inaccurate. The new sales forecast will be used to initiate the budgeting process and to identify more completely the underlying process that generates sales. Larry Husky, the controller of Lockit, has considered many possible independent variables and equations to predict sales and has narrowed his choices to four equations. Husky used annual observations from 20 prior years to estimate each of the four equations. Following are definitions of the variables used in the four equations and a statistical summary of these equations: St=ForecastedsalesindollarsforLockitinperiodtSt1=ActualsalesindollarsforLockitinperiodt1Gt=ForecastedU.S.grossdomesticproductinperiodtGt1=ActualU.S.grossdomesticproductinperiodt1Nt1=Lockitsnetincomeinperiodt1 Required: 1.
