Concept explainers
You serve as the president of XYZ corporation, which is an energy intensive manufacturing operation. You have four boilers to produce steam and electricity for your operations. One is a semi-suspension fired boiler with a capacity of 100 tons of coal per hour. The boiler can also burn supplemental fuel such as coconut or macadamia nut shells. The other three boilers arc peaking units and burn fuel oil. The City of Podunk has approached you about the possibility of burning solid waste as a supplemental fuel. As the president of the XYZ Corporation, you need to develop answers to many political, social, and technical questions before you make a commitment to the city.
a. What specific questions would you ask your own power plant engineer about the possibility of accepting Podunk’s MSW?
b. What specific additional data would you need from the city
before you discuss this further?

- The ideal equation for the combustion of cellulose is C6H10O5 + 6O26O2 + 5H2O. What is a similar idealized equation for pyrolysis? What end products might you expect?arrow_forwardA coal with 6% ash and a heating value of 13,000 Btu/lb is burned in a new power plant, Assume that 30% of the ash falls out as bottom ash in the furnace. Calculate the efficiency of an ESP required to meet federal new source performance standards.arrow_forwardYou are the engineer responsible for the licensing body to authorize the operation of the Queimadinhos thermoelectric plant located in the south of the country, whose characteristics are described in Table 1. 1) For the project presented, what will be the effective height of the chimney? - 5. Estimate the daily amount of magnesium hydroxide needed for FGD for a 350 MW power plant (0.305 efficiency) that uses a 14,380 BTU/lb bituminous coal with 0.85 wt% S. Assume a 95 % utilization of magnesium hydroxide and that the plant meets 90% removal of sulfur.arrow_forwardwhat are the purpose of biogas generator inw wastewater treatmentarrow_forwardAn incinerator burns 180 lb/hr chlorobenzene and has a stack gas containing 7% oxygen by volume on a dry basis. - what is nature of fuels stored in internal floating roof storage tank? in oil and gasarrow_forwardDesign a laboratory scale chemostat to aerobically treat a 10 liters per day of a synthetic wastewater containing 500 mg/L of glucose. In order to design and operate such a chemostat you will need to not only need to calculate the volume of the reactor, but you also need to determine the amount of oxygen that must be supplied and at what rate, and the amount of biomass produced and the composition of the effluent (i.e., effluent COD and biomass concentration). Make reasonable assumptions for all necessary parameters you may need for this problem. Make sure to check units of parameters assumed.arrow_forwardHow can we adjust air/fuel ratio in the low NOx burners?arrow_forward
- Why some diesel vehicles have battery-driven attached to the fuel tanks in order to be able to power them with natural oil? How does this affect? Why some diesel vehicles have two tanks, one with petrodiesel and the other one with vegetable oil? How does this affect?arrow_forwardI need the answer as soon as possiblearrow_forwardDetermine the amount of SO2 released from the combustion of 1500 gallons of waste oil (135,000 BTU/gal) with 1.6 wt % S. The oil has a specific gravity of 0.86. How much reduction would this need to meet NSPS for a 125 MW electric utility steam generation source (35% efficiency)?arrow_forward
