Chapter 7, Problem 7.43QP

Three batches of concrete were prepared using the same materials and ingredients, except that they have water-cement ratios of 0.50, 0.55, and 0.60, respectively. The following tests were performed on specimens made of the three batches:

  • Compressive strength test on 100 mm × 200 mm cylinders
  • Center-point flexure test on 100 mm × 100 mm × 300 mm beams
  • Split tension test on 150 mm × 300 mm cylinders

Three replicates were tested for each test. Table P7.43 shows the average failure loads for the three replicates of each case.

It is required to do the following:

  1. a. Complete Table P7.43
  2. b. Using an Excel sheet, plot the relationships between water-cement ratio and compressive strength, modulus of rupture, and tensile strength on the same graph. Label all axes and curves.
  3. c. Comment on the effect of water–cement ratio on the compressive strength, modulus of rupture, and tensile strength.

Three batches of concrete were prepared using the same materials and ingre-dients, except that they have water–cement ratios of 0.50, 0.55, and 0.60,respectively. The following tests were performed on specimens made of thethree batches:■ Compressive strength test on 4′′ * 8′′ cylinders■ Center-point flexure test on 4′′ * 4′′ * 12′′ beams■ Split tension test on 6′′ * 12′′ cylindersThree replicates were tested for each test. Table shows the average failure loads for the three replicates of each case.It is required to do the following:a. Complete Tableb. Using an Excel sheet, plot the relationships between water–cement ratio and compressive strength, modulus of rupture, and tensile strength on the same graph. Label all axes and curves.c. Comment on the effect of water–cement ratio on the compressive strength, modulus of rupture, and tensile strength.
The results of a laboratory experiment to evaluate the effects of a plasticizer are shown.a. Calculate the water/cement in each of the three cases. b. Choose an appropriate case that - by using water reducer, how can we increase the compressive strength of concrete without changing workability? (Refer to the appropriate case in the table) c. Choose an appropriate case that - by using a water reducer, how can we improve workability without changingthe compressive strength? (Refer to the appropriate case in the table)d. Choose an appropriate case that - by using water reducer, how can we reduce cost without changing workability or strength? (Refer to the appropriate case in the table)
Three 100*200 mm cylindrical concrete specimens were tested for 28 days compressive strength and show 25.5 MPa, 28.6 MPa and 24.8 MPa compressive strength.   a) What is the average compressive strength of this concrete? b) What is the approximate tensile strength of this concrete? c) What is the approximate modulus of elasticity of this concrete?
