Core Mass
Groups of students in a biology class conduct an experiment to explore the movement of water into and out of plant cells. Each group makes six potato
cores and mneasures the initial masses of the cores. The groups submerge the potato cores in sucrose solutions of differing concentrations that range
from 0.0 M to 1.0 M. After one hour, each group removes the potato cores from the solutions and measures the final masses of the cores. The initial and
final masses of the potato cores are used to calculate a percent change in mass for each core to account for differences in the initial masses. The students
generate a graph using the average percent change in mass for all the groups in the class for each solution.
