Chapter 7.2, Problem 10P
Summary Introduction
Interpretation: Concept of utilization in operation management has been discussed.
Concept Introduction: Utilization say us, how effectively resources is being used. Suppose machine runs non-stop, it can produce 5000 widgets a day. That's the machine’s total available capacity. But of course, it can't run non-stop throughout day. Machine require to shut down sometimes for maintenance and repairs, user training, and any number of other reasons. This means it will never make as many widgets as it's capable of producing.

It takes a cycle of 12 minutes to mould 50 defect-free standard bricks plus 1 minute to adjust the machine for a brick-making machine operated by two machine operators paid R70/hr each. Another lower-capacity machine also takes 12 minutes to mould the bricks plus 36 seconds to adjust the machine, to produce 25 standard bricks operated by one operator paid R100 per hour. If both machines are operated 8 hours a day and a standard brick is sold at R2.00, determine which process should be selected?
