Question
Chapter 7.3, Problem 7CC
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation: Melphalan is an alkylating agent and is also a chemotherapy drug that is used in cancer and myeloma. The mechanism of the alkylation process of melphalan with nucleophile is to be interpreted.
Concept introduction:
A molecule can have both nucleophilic and electrophilic centers. An electrophilic center must be electron-deficient and can form a bond with a nucleophile. Here the nucleophile is an electron-rich species that can react with cation or any other electrophile.

β-Vetivone is isolated from vetiver, a perennial grass that yields a variety ofcompounds used in traditional eastern medicine, pest control, and fragrance. In one synthesis, ketone A is converted to β-vetivone by a two-step process: Michael reaction, followed by intramolecular aldol reaction. (a) What Michael acceptor is needed for the conjugate addition? (b) Draw a stepwise mechanism for the aldol reaction, which forms the six-membered ring.
