Chapter 8, Problem 18CI

Automobile exhaust is a major cause of air pollution. One pollutant is nitrogen oxide, which forms from nitrogen and oxygen gases in the air at the high temperature in an automobile engine. Once emitted into the air, nitrogen oxide reacts with oxygen to produce nitrogen dioxide, a reddish brown gas with a sharp, pungent odor that makes up smog. One component of gasoline is heptane, C7H16, which has a density of 0.684 g/mL. In one year, a typical automobile uses 550 gal of gasoline and produces 41 lb of nitrogen oxide. (7.1, 7.5, 7.7, 8.6)

Chapter 8, Problem 18CI, Automobile exhaust is a major cause of air pollution. One pollutant is nitrogen oxide, which forms

  1. Write a balanced chemical equation for the production of nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide.
  2. If all the nitrogen oxide emitted by one automobile is converted to nitrogen dioxide in the atmosphere, how many kilograms of nitrogen dioxide are produced in one year by a single automobile?
  3. Write a balanced chemical equation for the combustion of heptane.
  4. How many moles of CO2 are produced from the gasoline used by the typical automobile in one year, assuming the gasoline is all heptane?
  5. How many liters of carbon dioxide at STP are produced in one year from gasoline used by the typical automobile?

The U.S. proven natural gas reserves in 2013 were 323 trillion  ft3 . How long will these reserves last if there are no imports or exports and if the U.S. annual rate of use of 24.5 trillion  ft3  continues?
Since the pandemic has hit, more people are growing their own gardens and processing the fruits of their work. One thing that is flying off the shelves are spices for canning, such as alum. From this lab, you have seen how easy it is to prepare an alum, and the ingredients to make this are not difficult to obtain. You are going to make a batch of pickles and the recipe requires 6.05g of alum for each quart jar of pickles and you plan on making 50 jar of pickles. The % yield of making alum is only 84.4%.  a. What is the actual yield of alum that you need to prepare to make your pickles?  b. What is the theoretical yield of alum required to prepare the pickles?  c. What mass of aluminum do you need to start with to make the required amount of alum for the preparation of the pickles?
One of the best-selling light, or low-calorie, beers is 4.2% alcohol by volume and a 12-oz serving contains 110 calories, to estimate the percentage of calories that comes from alcohol, consider the following questions. Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction of ethanol with oxygen to make carbon dioxide and water. If 4.2% of total volume of ethanol and the density of ethanol is 0.789 g/mL, what mass of ethanol does a 12-oz serving of light beer contains?
