Glycolysis- Glucose is broken down in the cytoplasm of cells through the process of glycolysis.
Explanation of Solution
The first stage of cellular respiration is glycolysis. The word glycolysis comes from the Greek works glykysmeaning sweet and lysis, meaning to break . It is an anaerobic process. In this process each glucose molecule is broken down in the cytoplasm of cells to produce two ATP and two NADPH molecules. The 6 carbon compound (glucose) is broken down to two 3 carbon compounds, glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate (G3P). The two 3 carbon compounds are converted into two molecules of pyruvate. Four more molecules of ATP are produced.
