Chapter 8, Problem 32A
Summary Introduction

To define:

The given vocabulary termin a complete sentence.

Introduction:

Organisms obtain energy through a process called cellular respiration. During this process complex organic molecules are broken down into simple substances. The main aim of cellular respiration is to harvest electrons from carbon compounds and use that energy to make ATP. ATP is used to provide energy for cells to perform work. This process occurs in two stages, which are, glycolysis and aerobic respiration.

Answer to Problem 32A

Glycolysis- Glucose is broken down in the cytoplasm of cells through the process of glycolysis.

Explanation of Solution

The first stage of cellular respiration is glycolysis. The word glycolysis comes from the Greek works glykysmeaning sweet and lysis, meaning to break . It is an anaerobic process. In this process each glucose molecule is broken down in the cytoplasm of cells to produce two ATP and two NADPH molecules. The 6 carbon compound (glucose) is broken down to two 3 carbon compounds, glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate (G3P). The two 3 carbon compounds are converted into two molecules of pyruvate. Four more molecules of ATP are produced.
