The asteroid that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2012 (see Application on page 137) was moving at 35.5 km/s relative to the Sun just before it entered Earth’s atmosphere. Calculations based on orbital observations show that it was moving at 11.2 km/s at aphelion (its most distant point from the Sun). Find the distance at aphelion, expressed in astronomical units (1 AU is the average distance of Earth from the Sun; see Appendix E).

- What would be the Schwarzschild radius, in light years, if our Milky Way galaxy of 100 billion stars collapsed into a black hole? Compare this to our distance from the center, about 13,000 light years.arrow_forwardComet Halley (Fig. P11.21) approaches the Sun to within 0.570 AU, and its orbital period is 75.6 yr. (AU is the symbol for astronomical unit, where 1 AU = 1.50 1011 m is the mean EarthSun distance.) How far from the Sun will Halleys comet travel before it starts its return journey?arrow_forwardAstronomers have observed an otherwise normal star, called S2, closely orbiting an extremely massive but small object at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy called SgrA. S2 moves in an elliptical orbit around SgrA with a period of 15.2 yr and an eccentricity ee = 0.87. In 2002, S2 reached its closest approach to SgrA, a distance of only 123 AU (1AUAU = 1.50×1011m1.50×1011m is the mean Earth - Sun distance). Determine the mass MM of SgrA, the massive compact object (believed to be a supermassive black hole) at the center of our Galaxy. State MM in kgkg and in terms of the mass of our Sun. Express your answer using two significant figures.arrow_forward

A star orbiting near the galaxy's periphery is 6.0 ✕ 104 light-years from its center. If its period is 5.3 ✕ 107 years instead, what is the mass (in solar masses) of the galaxy? Such calculations are used to imply the existence of other matter, such as a very massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. solar masses *answer for b*arrow_forward
