Case summary:
Mr. D’s wife notices that her husband has constant back pain and stiffness. The pain and stiffness keep on increasing and spread up to his vertebra. On diagnosis ankylosing spondylitis is noticed.
Adequate information:
Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic disease that causes fibrosis, ossification and synostosis.
To determine:
The health concerns related to ankylosing spondylitis.
Introduction:
Mr. D is suffering from ankylosing spondylitis which is a type of arthritis that affects the vertebral column. It is caused by the fusion of bones with each other. The inflammation in the joints is due to abnormal joining of the bones and tendinitis. There is no cure and treatment available for this disorder.

Genetic analysis at autopsy shows a defect in the gene for fibrillin. Which of the following events most likely occurs with defective fibrillin? (A) Elastic fibers in the extracellular matrix are not correctly formed (B) Hyaluronic acid in proteoglycans is not sulfated on the proper hydroxyl residues (C) Intermediate filaments are not assembled in endothelial cells (D) Shorter side chains of chondroitin sulfate are present on the proteoglycans (E) Tubulin is not polymerized correctly due to the lack of GTP in endothelial cellsarrow_forwardCadherins are calcium-dependent adhesion proteins. They are homophilic proteins found in cell-cell adhesion. Answer the following. a. Explain what is meant by the term homophilic in this context. b. In what kind of cell-cell junction are cadherins found?arrow_forward
- Upon the application of a botulinum toxin to a culture of freshly harvested neurons, a graduate student notices that activated neurons stopped releasing neurotransmitter upon activation. Performing a proteomic analysis she will not find which protein? a) synaptophysin b) synapsin c) syntaxin d) synaptobrevinarrow_forwardDuring a microscopy exercise in the anatomy laboratory,a student makes the following observations about a tissuesection: (1) The section contains some different types ofscattered protein fibers—that is, they exhibit differentwidths, some are branched, some are long and unbranched, and their staining characteristics differ (some are seenonly with specific stains). (2) Several cell types withdifferent morphologies are scattered throughout the section, but these cells are not grouped tightly together. (3) Theexamined section has some “open spaces”—that is, placesbetween cells and the observed fibers in the section thatappear clear with no recognizable features. What type oftissue is the student observing? Where might this tissue befound in the body?arrow_forwardDr Renko studied diffusion of tracer molecules to study paracellular diffusion across an epithelial monolayer of Caco-2 cells. The tracers were fluorescently labelled dextran molecules of different molecular weight. She is screening various drugs to determine whether they affect the cells in any way. Which drugs are most likely to change paracellular diffusion? a.) Drugs that modify microvilli are the most likely to change paracellular diffusion b.) Drugs that modify gap junctions are the most likely to change paracellular diffusion c.) Drugs that modify with aquaporins are the most likely to change paracellular diffusion d.) Drugs that modify tight junctions are the most likely to change paracellular diffusionarrow_forward
