Chapter 8, Problem 8D.5ST
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The terms and levels that may arise from the given electronic configuration has to be identified.

Concept-Introduction:

Clebsch–Gordan series:

The plausible values of quantum number L can be calculated using orbital angular momentum quantum numbers of the electrons in outermost shell of the atom through a series called Clebsch–Gordan series. It is given as,

L = l1 + l2, l1 + l2 - 1, ..., |l1 - l2|

Total angular momentum quantum number: The total angular momentum being the vector sum of the orbital and the spin angular momenta. The possible values of J (a positive number) are found by forming the series

J = L + S, L + S - 1, ..., |L - S|

Explanation of Solution

The Clebsch–Gordan series should be used to identify the L values. The given electronic configuration is 4p13d1 in which one p and one d electrons are coupled. For d and p electrons, only angular momenta should be considered.

For each electron l=1and2(l1 = 1 forp electron and l2 = 2 for d electron). The L values are given as,

    L = l1 + l2, l1 + l2 - 1, ..., |l1 - l2|L=1+2,1+2-1,1-2L=3,2,1

Thus, the term symbols are P, D, and F. Now the total spin angular momentum quantum number S for two d electrons is calculated as,

     S = s1 + s2, s1 + s2 - 1, ..., |s1 - s2|S=12+12,|12-12|S=1,0

The multiplicities are calculated as,

    S=1,02S + 1 =2(1) + 1 =32S + 1 =2(0) + 1 =1

Therefore, the term symbols are 1F, 1D21P,3F, 3D, 3P. Now, the total angular momentum quantum number, J, is calculated as,

    J = L + S, L + S - 1, ..., |L - S|L=1,2,3(derivedfromsymbolF,D,P)S=1,0For3P term, J=2,1,0For1P term,J=1For3D term,J=3,2,1For1D term,J=2For3F term,J=4,3,2For1F term,J=3

Therefore, term symbols with levels are 1F31D21P1,3F4,3,23D3,2,13P2,1,0
