Chapter 8.3, Problem 96E
Australia is one of the world’s leading producers of uranium for use in nuclear power production. The graph shows annual uranium production in Australia from 2000 to 2010 in millions of pounds.
- (a) Convert the weights into metric tons, then draw a line graph using your data. Scale the vertical axis so that the values range from zero to 12,000 metric tons.
- (b) Describe the apparent change in uranium production for each graph based on a quick look, and discuss possible reasons for the discrepancy.

Prices of diamonds are determined by what is known as the 4 Cs: cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. The prices of diamonds go up as the carat weight increases, but the increase is not smooth. For example, the difference between the size of a 0.99-carat diamond and a 1-carat diamond is undetectable to the naked human eye, but the price of a 1-carat diamond tends to be much higher than the price of a 0.99 diamond. In this question, we use two random samples of diamonds, 0.99 carats and 1 carat, each sample of size 23, and compare the average prices of the diamonds. In order to be able to compare equivalent units, we first divide the price for each diamond by 100 times its weight in carats. That is, for a 0.99-carat diamond, we divide the price by 99. For a 1 carat diamond, we divide the price by 100. The distributions and some sample statistics are shown below

The line graphs in Figure show the percentages of marriages ending in divorce based on the wife’s age at marriage. Here are two mathematical models that approximate the data displayed by the line graphs:In each model, the variable n is the number of years after marriage and the variable d is the percentage of marriages ending in divorce.a. Use the appropriate formula to determine the percentage of marriagesending in divorce after 10 years when the wife is over 25 at the time ofmarriage.b. Use the appropriate line graph in Figure to determine the percentageof marriages ending in divorce after 10 years when the wife is over 25 at the time of marriage.c. Does the value given by the mathematical model underestimate or overestimate the actual percentage of marriages ending in divorce after10 years as shown by the graph? By how much?

- The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, measured in parts per million, has been increasing as a result of the burning of oil and coal. The buildup of gases and particles traps heat and raises the planet’s temperature. The bar graph in Figure (a) gives the average atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide and the average global temperature for six selected years. The data are displayed as a set of six points in a rectangular coordinate system in Figure (b) [see attached]. Solve, Use the data points (317, 57.04) and (354, 57.64), shown, but not labeled, in Figure (b) [see attached herewith] to obtain a linear function that models average global temperature, f(x), for an atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration of x parts per million. Round m to three decimal places and b to one decimal place. Then use the function to project average global temperature at a concentration of 600 parts per million.arrow_forwardThe peak flow rate of a person is the fastest rate at which the person can expel air after taking a deep breath.Peak flow rate is measured in units of liters per minute and gives an indication of the person’s respiratoryhealth. Researchers measured peak flow rate and height for each of a sample of 17 men. The results are givenin the table. (image included) a. Create a scatterplot displaying the relationship between peak flow rate and height.b. Calculate the sample correlation coefficient for peak flow rate and height.c. If we were to predict the peak flow rate using height with a least-squares regression model, whatis the slope estimate ˆb?d. Continuing with part a, what is the intercept estimate ˆa?e. Based on the regression model, what is the predicted peak flow rate for a subject that is 175cmtall?f. Looking at the original data, subject 8 is 175cm tall with a peak flow rate of 670l/min. What isthe residual for this subject?g. Fit the least-squares model in R. Complete parts (a) through (d). (a) Do you think the variable "weekly time spent watching television" would be normally distributed? If not, what shape would you expect the variable to have? A. The variable "weekly time spent watching television" is likely normally distributed. B. The variable "weekly time spent watching television" is likely skewed right, not normally distributed. C. The variable "weekly time spent watching television" is likely symmetric, but not normally distributed. D. The variable "weekly time spent watching television" is likely skewed left, not normally distributed. E. The variable "weekly time spent watching television" is likely uniform, not normally distributed. (b) According to a certain survey, adults spend 2.35 hours per day watching television on a weekday. Assume that the standard deviation for "time spent…arrow_forward
- Each row represents an experimental “run” (in this case, averaged sample of mango wine). Column A shows the run number; Column B shows the percentage of ethanol; Column C shows the amount of glycerol (in g/L); Column D shows the amount of acid (in g/L); Column E shows the temperature of the run (in °C); and Column F shows the pH of the run. Y represents Ethanol of mango wine. 1. Create a scatterplot of the ethanol data for all 20 runs a. Draw a graphical representation of the model that you chose to use. b. Comparing the model to your data, evaluate its fit in one or two sentences. (Not sure what this question is getting at. I've provided all the information given) c. Replace the generic Yi = β0 + ε with the information you have here. Please help. I have no idea what this even means or where to start. According to a 2015 analysis from a national women's group, women lose $435,049 over the course of a career because of the pay gap. The bar graph to the right shows the average earnings in the United States for men and women at ages 22 and 60. This exercise involves the graphs of models for the data shown in the rectangular coordinate system to the right. Complete parts (a) through (c) below.
