Concept explainers
Rotating cylinders were proposed as a means of ship propulsion in 1924 by the German engineer, Flettner. The original Flettner rotor ship had two rotors, each about 10 ft in diameter and 50 ft high, rotating at up to 800 rpm. Calculate the maximum lift and drag forces that act on each rotor in a 30-mph wind. Compare the total force to that produced at the optimum L/D at the same wind speed. Estimate the power needed to spin the rotor at 800 rpm.

- A light truck weighs 3,300 lb and is rated at 30 miles per gallon for 52 mph highway driving on level ground. Under those conditions, the engine must overcome air resistance, rolling resistance, and other sources of friction. Give your answers in the units shown. (a) The coefficient of drag is 0.55 at 52 mph, and the truck's frontal area is 28 ft?. What is the drag force on the truck? (Express your answer using three significant figures.) F = lb (b) How much power must the engine produce at 52 mph just to overcome air resistance? (Express your answer using three significant figures.) P = |hp (c) In part (b) how much gasoline would be consumed each hour (neglecting other frictional effects)? (Express your answer using three significant figures.) V = galarrow_forward7. A 2700-lb car is traveling @ sea level at a constant speed. Its engine is running at 4500 rev/min. and is producing 175 ft-lb of torque. It has a drivetrain efficiency of 90%, a drive axle slippage of 2%, 15-inch-radius wheels, and an overall gear reduction ratio of 3 to 1. If the car's frontal area is 21.5 ft, what is its drag coefficient?arrow_forwardCurrent Attempt in Progress In the 1930s, the U.S. Navy operated dirigibles. The largest was the U.S.S. Akron with a length of 785 ft and a maximum diameter of 132 ft. Its maximum speed was 84 mph (123.2 ft/sec). Moving at top speed at 10,000 ft standard atmosphere, estimate the power required in horsepower to overcome the friction drag. Disregard effects of fins and other protrusions. Assume the surface of the dirigible is smooth and the friction drag is that over a flat plate. (Hint: "unwrap" the outer surface of the ship.) W = hparrow_forward
- For a new sailboat, a designer wants to determine the drag force that may be expected at a given speed. To do so, she places a model of the proposed hull in a test channel and uses three cables to keep its bow on the centerline of the channel. Dynamometer readings indicate that for a given speed, the tension is 40 lb in cable AB and 60 lb in cable AE. - Explain the mechanism of drag and lift force generation for the wing using Newton's law. Here are the hints : If the wing does not exist, the velocity distribution is uniform at v=U_inf. Therefore, the x-directional velocity of the air is deceralated by the wing. This implies that the wing applied a force in the -x-direction to the air (Newton's second law). In other words, the air flow applied a force in the x-direction to the wing (Newton's third law). This is the mechanism of drag generation.arrow_forwardQ1 A car is traveling at sea level at a constant speed. It weighs 2500-lbs, has a frontal area of 20 ft² and has a 90% drivetrain efficiency. - A small three (3) blade turbine with 10 meter long blades is shut down due to wind speeds being 35 m/s. The turbine has a brake on the low speed shaft rotor to keep the rotor from spinning in these circumstances. However, a maintenance man accidentally sets the blades to have an angle of attack of 10 degrees against the incoming wind when the rotor is facing into the wind.
