Interpretation:
The group that the terminal atoms in a
molecule belong to is to be determined where the central atom is either from 5A or 6A with different geometries.
Concept introduction:
Electron domains are the bond pair and lone pair of electrons around the central atom.
According to VSEPR, the electron domains repel each other and arrange themselves as far apart as possible, in space. The order of repulsion is lone pair–lone pair >lone pair–bond pair > bond pair–bond pair.
Molecular geometry is the arrangement of bonded atoms. If no lone pairs are present, the molecular geometry is the identical to the electron domain geometry.
