Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The resonance formulas for given molecule has to be written and the NN bond length in the molecule is estimated.
Concept introduction:
Resonance formula:
The electron structure of a given molecule contains delocalized bonding via possible structure of all electron-dot formulas is known as resonance description.
One form of resonance stable structure is converted into other forms. It possible in both single and multiple bonds molecule. The electron-dot formulas differing only in the placement of single and double bonds
Lewis structure otherwise known as Lewis dot diagrams or electron dot structures that show the bond between atoms and lone pairs of electrons that are present in the molecule. Lewis structure represents each atom and their position in structure using the chemical symbol. Excess electrons forms the lone pair are given by pair of dots, and are located next to the atom.

- Using the standard enthalpy of formation data in Appendix G, calculate the bond energy of the carbon-sulfur double bond in CS2.arrow_forwardIn which of the following molecules does the sulfur have an expanded octet? For those that do, write the Lewis structure. (a) SO2 (b) SF4 (c) SO2Cl2 (d) SF6arrow_forwardUsing the bond dissociation enthalpies in Table 8.8, estimate the enthalpy of combustion of gaseous methane, CH4, to give water vapor and carbon dioxide gas.arrow_forward
- Write all resonance structures of chlorobenzene, C6H5Cl, a molecule with the same cyclic structure as benzene. In all structures, keep the CCl bond as a single bond. Which resonance structures are the most important?arrow_forwardThe equation for the combustion of gaseous methanol is 2 CH3OH(g) + 3 O2(g) 2 CO2(g) + 4 H2O(g) (a) Using the bond dissociation enthalpies in Table 8.8, estimate the enthalpy change for this reaction. What is the enthalpy of combustion of one mole of gaseous methanol? (b) Compare your answer in part (a) with the value of tHcalculated using enthalpies of formation data.arrow_forwardNitrosyl azide, N4O, is a pale yellow solid first synthesized in 1993. Write the Lewis structure for nitrosyl azide.arrow_forward
- n your own words, what is meant by the term electronegativity? What are the trends across and down the periodic table for electronegativity? Explain them, and describe how they are consistent with trends of ionization energy and atomic radii.arrow_forwardWrite Lewis structures that obey the octet rule for each of the following molecules and ions. (In each case the first atom listed is the central atom.) a. POCl3, SO42, XeO4, PO43, ClO4 b. NF3, SO32, PO33. ClO3 c. ClO2, SCl2, PCl2 d. Considering your answers to parts a, b, and c, what conclusions can you draw concerning the structures of species containing the same number of atoms and the same number of valence electrons?arrow_forwardDefine the term lattice energy. Why, energetically, do ionic compounds form? Fig. 3-8 illustrates the energy changes involved in the formation of MgO(s) and NaF(s). Why is the lattice energy of MgO(s) so different from that of NaF(s)? The magnesium oxide is composed of Mg2+ and O2 ions. Energetically, why does Mg2+O2 form and not Mg+O? Why doesnt Mg3+O3 form?arrow_forward
- Using the standard enthalpy of formation data in Appendix G, show how the standard enthalpy of formation of HCl(g) can be used to determine the bond energy.arrow_forwardConsider the reaction 2 S(g) + 3 O2(g) → 2 SO3(g). Using the standard enthalpies of formation listed in Appendix G of your text and the bond energy of 498.4 kJ/mol in molecular oxygen, calculate the average sulfur-oxygen bond energy, in units of kJ/mol, in sulfur trioxide gas.arrow_forwardWhen gaseous sulfur trioxide is dissolved in concentratedsulfuric acid, disulfuric acid forms:SO₃(g)+ H₂SO₄(l) →H₂S₂O₇(l) Use bond energies Table to determine ΔH°ᵣₓₙ. (The S atoms in H₂S₂O₇ are bonded through an O atom. Assume Lewis structures with zero formal charges; BE of SNO is 552 kJ/mol.)arrow_forward
