Chapter 9, Problem 9.26P
Four railroad cars, each of mass 2.50 × 104 kg, are coupled together and coasting along horizontal tracks at speed vi toward the south. A very strong but foolish movie actor, riding on the second car, uncouples the front car and gives it a big push, increasing its speed to 4.00 m/s southward. The remaining three cars continue moving south, now at 2.0 m/s. (a) Find the initial speed of the four cars. (b) By how much did the potential energy within the body of the actor change? (c) State the relationship between the process described here and the process in Problem 13.

A hockey player with a mass of M = 72 kg, standing on ice, pushes a plate with a mass of m = 0.5 kg in a horizontal direction at a speed of v = 30 m / s, which causes him to start moving in the opposite direction. After how long it stops if the coefficient of friction between the skates and the iceis kt = 0.02 and by how much does it move?
Three skydivers are plummeting earthward. They are initially holding onto each other, but then push apart. Two skydivers of mass 70 and 80 kg gain horizontal velocities of 1.2 m/s north and 1.4 m/s southeast, respectively. What is the horizontal velocity of the third skydiver, whose mass is 55 kg?
A skater of mass 81.0 kg initially moves in a straight line at a speed of 5.10 m/s. The skater approaches a child of mass 43.5 kg, whom he lifts on his shoulders. Assuming there are no external horizontal forces, what is the skater's final velocity?
