In the metric system, temperatures are measured on thermometers using the Celsius (also called centigrade) scale instead of the Fahrenheit scale that we commonly use. On the Celsius scale, water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees. To convert a temperature from one scale to a temperature on the other, you can use the following equation:
This equation converts degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit. You can also use it (plus algebra) to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, which we recommend that you do. If you really want another equation to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, you can use the equation
where F is the Fahrenheit temperature and C is the Celsius temperature. Use this equation in Exercises 69–76 to convert each temperature to a corresponding measurement in the other system.
