Consider these two relationships:
Relationship 1: Awoman paints a fence at a steady rate, Initially, there are 200 feet of fence to paint. After 5 hours, the woman has finished painting the fence. Let x be the number of hours the woman has painted and let y be the number of feet of fence left to paint.
Relationship 2: Some men are painting a long fence. It takes 8 men 4 hours to paint the fence. Assume that all men work at the same steady rate. Let x be the number of men painting the fence and let y be the number of hours it takes to paint the fence with that many men.
Make a table, draw a graph, and write an equation for relationship 1 and for relationship 2, explaining why you can write the equations the way you do. What kinds of relationships are they and how can you tell?
