Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Molecular formula of caffeine has to be given.
Concept Introduction:
Empirical formula is the one that can be determined from the molar mass of the elements that is present in the compound and the mass percentage of the elements. The mass percentage of the elements present in the compound is converted into the moles of each element considering the molar mass of each element. The relative number of moles for each type of atoms is found out finally.
Molecular formula of a compound can be found if the empirical formula and molar mass of the compound is known. The molar mass of compound is divided by the molar mass of the empirical formula in order to obtain the factor which is multiplied with the coefficients of empirical formula in order to obtain the molecular formula.

- 4-102 Aspartame, an artificial sweetener used as a sugar substitute in some foods and beverages, has the molecular formula C14H18N2O5. (a) How many mg of aspartame are present in 3.72 × 1026 molecules of aspartame? (b) Imagine you obtain 25.0 mL of aspartame, which is known to have a density of 1.35 g/mL. How many molecules of aspartame are present in this volume? (c) How many hydrogen atoms are present in 1.00 mg of aspartame? (d) Complete the skeletal structure of aspartame, where all the bonded atoms are shown but double bonds, triple bonds, and/or lone pairs are missing. (e) Identify the various types of geometries present in each central atom of aspartame using VSEPR theory. (f) Determine the various relative bond angles associated with each central atom of aspartame using VSEPR theory. (g) What is the most polar bond in aspartame? (h) Would you predict aspartame to be polar or nonpolar? (i) Is aspartame expected to possess resonance? Explain why or why not. (j) Consider the combustion of aspartame, which results in formation of NO2(g) as well as other expected products. Write a balanced chemical equation for this reaction. (k) Calculate the weight of C02(g) that can be prepared from 1.62 g of aspartame mixed with 2.11 g of oxygen gas.arrow_forwardSilicon is produced for the chemical and electronics industries by the following reactions. Give the balanced equation for each reaction. a. SiO2(s)+C(s)arefurnaceElectricSi(s)+CO(g) b. Liquid silicon tetrachloride is reacted with very pure solid magnesium, producing solid silicon and solid magnesium chloride. c. Na2SiF6(s) + Na(s) Si(s) + NaF(s)arrow_forward4.69 The pictures below show a molecular-scale view of a chemical reaction between H2 and CO to produce methanol, CH3OH. The box on the left represents the reactants at the instant of mixing, and the box on the right shows what is left once the reaction has gone to completion. Was there a limiting reactant in this reaction? If so, what was it? Write a balanced chemical equation for this reaction. As usual, your equation should use the smallest possible whole number coefficients for all substances.arrow_forward
- The active ingredient in Pepto-Bismo® (an over- the-counter remedy for an upset stomach) is bismuth sub-salicylate, C7H5BiO4. Analysis of a 1.7500-g sample of Pepto-Bismol yields 346 mg of bismuth. What percent by mass is bismuth subsalicylate in the sample? (Assume that there are no other bismuth-containing compounds in Pepto-Bismol.)arrow_forwardEthylene glycol is used as an automobile antifreeze and in the manufacture of polyester fibers. The name glycol stems from the sweet taste of this poisonous compound. Combustion of 6.38 mg of ethylene glycol gives 9.06 mg CO2 and 5.58 mg H2O. The compound contains only C, H, and O. What are the mass percentages of the elements in ethylene glycol?arrow_forwardBoron forms an extensive series of compounds with hydrogen, all with the general formula BxHy. To analyze one of these compounds, you burn it in air and isolate the boron in the form of B2O3 and the hydrogen in the form of water. You find that 0.1482 g BxHy gives 0.4221 g B2O3 when burned in excess O2. Determine the empirical I formula of BxHy.arrow_forward
- Given that the density of argon is 1.78 g/L under standard conditions of temperature and pressure, how many argon atoms are present in a room with dimensions 4.0 m 5.0 m 2.4 m that is filled with pure argon under these conditions of temperature and pressure?arrow_forwardChalky, white crystals in mineral collections are often labeled borax, which has the molecular formula Na2B4O7 10H2O, when actually they are partially dehydrated samples with the molecular formula Na2B4O7 5H2O, which is more stable under the storage conditions. Real crystals of borax are colorless and transparent. (a) Calculate the percent mass that the mineral has lost when it partially dehydrates. (b) Is the percent boron by mass the same in both compounds?arrow_forwardThe present average concentration (mass percent) of magnesium ions in seawater is 0.13%. A chemistry textbook estimates that if 1.00 × 108 tons Mg were taken out of the sea each year, it would take one million years for the Mg concentration to drop to 0.12%. Do sufficient calculations to either verify or refute this statement. Assume that Earth is a sphere with a diameter of 8000 mi, 67% of which is covered by oceans to a depth of 1 mi, and that no Mg is washed back into the oceans at any time.arrow_forward

A cereal product containing 58% H2O by mass is produced at the rate of 1000. kg/h. What mass of water must be evaporated per hour if the final product contains only 20.% water?arrow_forwardThe sugar sucrose, which is present in many fruits and vegetables, reacts in the presence of certain yeast enzymes to produce ethanol and carbon dioxide gas.
