Concept explainers
To calculate x and y intercept
Answer to Problem 3.1.1.1P
X-intercept is 7 and y-intercept is 28
Explanation of Solution
Given information:
Keith’s height above the bottom of the cliff and the time he has taken,
Time (min) | Height (ft) |
x | y |
0 | 28 |
2 | 20 |
4 | 12 |
7 | 0 |
Formula used:
x- Intercept and y- intercept definition
Calculation:
x- intercept is a point where the line intersects x- axis. Hence, according to the definition at x- intercept the value of y- coordinate will be zero.
Comparing the definition with the table, the co-ordinate with y-coordinate zero is,
Hence,
x-intercept is 7.
Similarly, y-intercept is a point where the line intersects y- axis. Hence, according to the definition at y- intercept the value of x- coordinate will be zero.
Comparing the definition with the table, the co-ordinate with x-coordinate zero is,
Hence,
y-intercept is 28.
