Prior to beginning to work on this discussion, read Chapter 1: Introduction to Global
Marketing. Make sure that you have a good grasp of the following key terms and
theories:
●
global marketing
●
marketing mix
●
competitive advantage
●
product/market expansion framework
●
driving forces affecting global marketing
●
restraining forces affecting global marketing
There is a saying in the business world that “nothing fails like success.” Take Gap, for
example. How can a fashion retailer that was once the source for wardrobe staples
such as chinos and white t-shirts suddenly lose its marketing edge? Motorola also fell
victim to its own success. The company’s Razr cell phone was a huge hit, but Motorola
struggled to leverage that success. Google acquired Motorola Mobility but then sold it to
Lenovo in 2014. Also, Starbucks former CEO Howard Shultz warned that his company
and brand risked becoming commoditized. And, as noted in Case 1-3 of the textbook,
some industry observers say that Apple “lost its cool” (Green & Keegan, 2020, p.29).
For your initial post,
●
Pick from one of the six companies named above. From a global marketing
standpoint, use all the six terms or theories listed above to explain your
analysis of their global marketing failure or decline. Throughout your initial
post, bold and underline each of the six terms and theories you use to make
them easy to identify.
●
Assume you were consulted as the global marketing expert to make
recommendations to management of that company. Analyze your top two
recommendations.
Your initial discussion post should be 250 words. Do not forget to cite your textbook and
any other sources used to support your ideas. You may refer to University of Arizona

While Motorola was selling countless Razrs, competitors were hard at work on more
sophisticated products for 3G networks.
Its work on 3G phones also faced problems. A semiconductor unit Motorola had spun off was
having trouble developing new chips for 3G cell phones. That slowed work on them because
Motorola had pledged to buy all cell phone chips from the spun-off unit through 2006. The deal
also meant Motorola couldn't shop for cheaper chips elsewhere, squeezing profit margins of
existing phones.

Motorola started its global journey by manufacturing the world’s first functioning cell phone
followed by the first experimental cellular network built in Chicago shortly after it reached the
United Kingdom(Linge, n.d.).
Global marketing
Motorola continued to dominate the market
with its products and services across the world with the introduction of walkie talkie devices for
military use, cellular car phones, semiconductors, microprocessors and the most popular cellular
device RAZR.
Marketing mix
Motorola invented mobile telephony, developing the cellular
infrastructure as well as the mobile devices. Motorola also developed the base stations in offices
and even the towers (and equipment on those towers) to allow for wireless communication to
function (Hartung, 2014b). In Addition, one of Motorola’s best products was the super slim
Motorola RAZR cellular phone. This product was desired by everyone mainly because it had an
appealing look especially with the wide variety of colors that they came in. It was popular among
many different age groups, Motorola had the product that everyone wanted to get their hands on.
Competitive advantage
Since the RAZR was an international best seller for a substantial
amount of time, the Motorola team decided to continue the process of making the most out of
their existing products, leaving the opportunity to further expand their global reach by creating

We can't downplay the benefits of defining and monitoring our marketing environment. Still, there is only so much we can accurately predict. Even with technological advancements, predictive software tools, and a keen eye on the marketing environment, some changes can't be forecasted or controlled. Techniques that work in one marketing environment may not work in the next. For businesses operating in multiple regions, this may prove a considerable challenge. The speed of change in the macro marketing environment may make it seem unnecessary to monitor and predict the environment. Business and marketing teams must stay nimble, accept changes quickly, and leverage their customer service and satisfaction strengths to maintain business success and a positive marketing environment. The Body Shop
The Body Shop may have grown rapidly in its early days, but its founder, the late Anita Roddick publicly dismissed marketing’s role. Roddick ridiculed marketers for putting the interests of shareholders before the needs of society. She had a similarly low opinion of the financial community, which she referred to as ‘Merchant Wankers’. While things were going well, nobody seemed to mind. Maybe Roddick had found a new way of doing business, and if she had the results to prove it, who needed marketers? But how could even such an icon as Anita Roddick manage indefinitely without consulting the fundamental principles of marketing? By embracing ethical issues, she thought she was way ahead of her rivals in understanding the public mood, long before the major retailers piled into Fairtrade and ‘green’ products? The troubles that the Body Shop suffer in this century indicate that a company may publicly dismiss the value of marketing while the going is good. Still, sooner or…
