10-2 Assignment: Reflective Dialogue
MKT500: Marketing Strategies
Shelby Holteen
I went in to this course with a specific mindset regarding marketing and the strategies associated.
Having a graphic design background I think I was hyper-focused on the creative side of market-
ing such as what content would be important to or draw in specific markets. What I have learned now is to essentially break down the backend of the design portion. In order to come up with the designs for marketing materials, you have to consider the budget, what marketing materials you actually need and how your audience will be interacting with your materials, but also the sched-
ule of distribution. I think subconsciously I considered those aspects but not to the full extent they should be considered and thoroughly thought out.
Being in positions where someone else’s job is to focus on those aspects, I essentially just as-
sisted with executing the creative portion. Something new to my thinking process was the use of marketing initiatives or objectives to help measure the success of a marketing campaign. I have never been in a position personally where I work through all different pieces of a marketing plan,
usually I just help someone else execute their marketing vision for the design portion so I knew the end goal but didn’t make it a priority in my mindset. Personally, the SWOT analysis was a new tool/strategy I learned to use throughout this course that I plan on using in my current position and in the future as well. I think recognizing a compa-
nies strengths and the opportunities they have will help me create designs that highlight those as-
pects and put a company or their product in a positive light.
The other aspect I plan on using is IEC; implementation, evaluation, and control. Learning how to evaluate the success of my designs will help me properly adjust them for future initiatives. I also think it will make me more conscious of the initial designs I create since I will be more aware of the end goals and target markets we are trying to reach.
I think having a better understand of the background information that goes in to the marketing material designs I typically work on will make me a better designer because I will have better background information to help execute my designs. Having this better understanding will allow me to better target various markets/audiences, execute more successful designs, and understand if they are working towards the overall objectives set out.

Market segmentation and product positioning in consumer markets are extremely important concepts for marketers to address. One of the big questions to address is what attributes should end up in the final positioning model(s). Furthermore, there are questions of whether the attributes should be of utilitarian or more hedonistic/psychographic in nature. Clearly there is also a place for creativity in these regards. Discuss how marketing management should go about making these critical product/brand positioning decisions. After some discussion, present an example of a creative perceptual map that Burger King could use to position and differentiate its brand from others like McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried chicken, and other fast food restaurants.
