Static Equilibrium and Elasticity Objectives: The purpose of this experiment is To study the conditions required for static equilibrium To familiarize ourselves with the principles of moments by investigating the moments of parallel forces. Introduction: In this experiment you will study the equilibrium of a simple system and observe the balancing of the forces and torques. You will also learn about tolerances and percentage errors. Torque is defined as force multiplied by the perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation to the line of action of the force. The perpendicular distance is called the lever arm . For a body in mechanical equilibrium: o The sum of the applied forces equals zero. o The sum of the applied torques equals zero. To attain equilibrium with parallel forces, two conditions must be met. 1. The sum of the forces acting downward must equal the sum of the forces acting upward. That is the net force equal zero which is mathematically represented as; ∑ 𝐹 𝑖 𝑖 = 0 This could loosely be interpreted as; Forces to the left = Forces to the Right OR Forces UP = Forces Down 2. The sum of the clockwise torques must equal the sum of the counterclockwise torques, illustrated mathematically as; ∑ 𝜏 𝑖 𝑖 = 0
Experiment 1. Copy and paste the link below in a browser https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/balancing-act/latest/balancing-act_en.html 2. Of the three options “Intro”, “Balance Lab”, and “Game”, double click on “Game” to select that option 3. Play all four levels of the “Game” and come up with a relation of how the balancing act is achieved. Q1. What relation did you come up with? Q2. Write the torque relation for the figure below Q3. How different is the relation for Q2 to that of Q1? Q4. Write a relation for two masses on the left side of the fulcrum (balance point) and one on the right Q5. Write a relation for two masses on either side of the fulcrum m 1 m 2 x 1 x 2
