CHIN 310 Assignment 4 Name: 1. Read the Preface to Collected Poems from Orchid Pavilion including compiler’s annotation to this piece (pp 351-353), and answer the following question: What kind of game did the author play with his guests? They played a “winding stream” drinking game What was the season? Spring What is the author remembered primarily as? (You can find the answer in the compiler's annotation) He is remembered as a master of calligraphy, including the running script Find the passage the author reflects on the meaning of life and its role in the history. “Life and death are the greatest of matters, indeed, but he is unaffected by them. Although heaven may overturn and Earth might sink, it is no loss to him. He carefully observes what is pure and does not let things influence him. He recognizes as fate the transformation of things and holds fast to their guiding principles.” 2. What’s going on in the Seven Stimuli ? What eventually cured the illness of the crown prince? What is the moral lesson of the story if we label it a piece of “remonstration literature”? Add some comments on the characteristics and style of the genre of this typical Han dynasty rhapsody. The crown prince is cured by having his senses pushed to its limits via fu descriptions. The moral lesson would involve teaching parables to princes. 3. Give a summary of T’ao Ch’ien’s “Peach Blossom Spring”. What do you think is the reason why people could not find that utopia? It involves a chance discovery of an ethereal utopia where people lead an ideal existence in harmony with nature. People living outside it could not find it because they took the wrong path and the person who made proper preparations passed away before he could leave. 4. Write a paragraph on T’ao Ch’ien poem “After Drinking Wine.” This poem presents a tranquil scene of rural solitude amidst the noise of human society. The speaker has retreated to a peaceful setting where they can appreciate the beauty of nature and the company of like-minded souls.
5. What went “wrong” in the long narrative poem “A Peacock Southeast Flew”? How did the two families reconcile? According to the so-called “Seven Conditions to Dismiss a Wife” introduced in the lecture, what kind of violation has the “new wife” committed in the eyes of the mother-in-law? The last stanza of the poem mentions a lesson that should be learned -- what kind of lesson is it according to your understanding? Jiao’s mother didn’t want him to marry Liu and broke them apart, and they reconciled by commiting suicide. In the eyes of the mother the new wife commited stealing. The lesson according to my understanding is that consequences such as those in the poem should be avoided through careful needs. 6. What is the reason that Mu Lan decided to join the imperial army, as described in the ballad we read? What is the symbolic meaning of the rabbits mentioned towards the end of the poem? She wanted to take her rival’s place in driving off the Jou-Jan nomads. The rabbits in the poem symbolize her comrades surprise that she is a woman.
