1 Unit 5 Project Outline PSY320- Language Development In Young Children Kara Parker Professor Laurie Winek 02-10-2024
2 Autism is a disorder that affects a child's behavior, social interactions, and educational experience. This disorder can impact a child's language development in various ways. This paper aims to discuss these effects in detail and explore different ways to support children with autism throughout their education journey. - Description and definition of overall characteristics of delay/disorder, its causes, and how it manifests itself in behavior, cognition, speech, and language. Autism is a condition that can manifest in different ways in children. It can cause them to feel anxious about schoolwork or social interactions, making it difficult for them to make friends or express their emotions. Autism is not caused by any external factors, but rather, it is something a child is born with. It is a genetic and non-genetic disorder. Often, children with autism rely on gestures rather than language to communicate. They may also have a stutter or a speech delay. -Assessment tools. Parents can conduct a checklist for Autism in Toddlers to see if their child may have autism. This assessment tool consists of questions that parents answer about their child's behavior. Teachers or clinicians can also use the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale to identify autism in a child.
- Interventions and instructional strategies. Early intervention strategies for children with autism can vary based on the child's individual needs and the severity of their condition. Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) is one such strategy that can be effective for children under the age of five. ABA helps to identify and modify behavior, while also improving social skills. Children with aggressive behaviors can especially benefit from ABA therapy. ABA aims to promote healthy and positive behaviors in children with autism. - Treatment options There are multiple treatment options available for children with autism, which are tailored specifically to their individual needs. Cognitive behavior therapy is a highly effective treatment that can help children with autism by setting goals and replacing negative behaviors with better choices. Medication treatments are also available, which can help improve focus, reduce hyperactivity, and address other behaviors that are commonly exhibited by individuals with autism.
