In health care today, leaders are important to ensure that the system continues to move forward, to improve, and survive with all of the changes that are occurring at an alarming rate. A leader, according to Sullivan (2013) “is anyone who uses interpersonal skills to influence others to accomplish a specific goal” (p. 41). Leadership can be in a formal or informal within an organization depending on their position within an organization (Sullivan, 2013). For this particular assignment, this writer performed an interview with the Vice President of Finance, Physician Services, and Business Development of our local hospital.

Description of a Leader and Philosophy of Leadership
K.W. reports that there are many ways to describe a leader; however, the most important one in the health care industry would be flexibility (K. Wilcox, personal communication, March 24, 2016). K.W. believes that one must be able to adjust to each and every situation according to what is needed; sometimes you must be passionate and show this where at other times you must be reserved (K. Wilcox, personal communication, March 24, 2016). He states that you must display courage through the tough decisions that present, remaining humble enough to admit when you do not know the answers (K. Wilcox, personal communication, March 24, 2016). He believes that leadership is like any other skill, just like in nursing you are taught how to start an IV, it is a skill that is learned and developed overtime (K.
The superior act of living an effective life lies in the pursuit of excellent vision, to move from where we are to where we ought to be, either as a person or as an organization. A health care leader must motivate the organizational team, find how to work with the associates to effectively dedicate their time and energy to achieve the identified goals and objectives through the established vision. The team members need to buy into the vision, where they are currently doing what the leader envisions, the leader must encourage them, keep them on track and set standards for the team by setting goals and objective, flowing from the vision. This will enable the leader to move the health care organization to the expected performance level within the set time period. The leader must ensure that individual responsibilities of the associates are identified, motivated and resources provided to achieve the identified goals. To pursue the vision, I will lead the development of the health care organization’s strategic alignment of clear goals and objectives, to preserve the core mission and encourage progress toward the envisioned future state. Also, I will encourage and provide the direction for the organization without hindering the development of the goals that we expect to accomplish.

To be a leader, a person must be able to be in front of everybody, taking risks, inspiring other’s actions, advocating for others. The next interview will underline how the manager on medical-surgical floor is working to achieve a better quality of work on her unit, and also, how she is leading her staff in maintaining a safety environment for the patients and for the staff, too. It is well known that teamwork brings the most satisfying results. Therefore, in order to implement a plan, a leader must have a united and dedicated team.
There were many options to interview for this assignment, after careful thought on whom to interview, I decided to interview someone outside of my work environment. I chose to interview a healthcare director who is much energized towards making change and being the best leader they can be. I liked the idea of interviewing this individual for the experience of having some awareness into an organization which I knew very little about, it was insightful to see leadership within a different frame of reference than I typically see within my work environment. The person I met with asked not to be named directly, his title is a director level at a large healthcare organization. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Ferris State and a Master’s degree (I don’t recall the college) in healthcare administration. He is a very energetic person and is very clear in the importance of good leadership. He was quick to start our meeting and take the lead by emphasizing to me how critical leadership is and that it’s a critical component towards the success of any organization, effective leaders help ensure that everyone works together seamlessly and they are much more likely to achieve the organization’s goals and success. A successful leader will be vital in motivating employees, communicating strategic directions and achieving organizational goals, without a good leader all of the organizations resources are less effective than they could be.
Leadership is much more than just leading people, it also requires vision. This vision can be focused locally or globally, as long as it provides a goal for the advancement of your organization (Ledlow & Coppola, 2012, p. 141). One such visionary is Ms. Rebecca Onie, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Health Leads, and member of the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation External Advisory Council (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2014, p. 1). While her origins are not based in healthcare, her aspirations and healthcare leadership have changed the way many providers think about healthcare.
Strong and effective leadership is one of the most significant factors in determining the success and durability of an organization or group (Huber, 2014). In examining the Humana organization, superiors influence subordinates, but subordinates also influence superiors. An important aspect of leadership is influencing others to come together around a common vision (Draft R., 2015). Health services have a various range of areas ranging from health care facilities to nursing or acute care centers. Humana’s leaders are as different as the market they serve. Thus, Humana’s leadership involves the influence of people to bring about changes toward a desirable future.
As the healthcare industry continues to evolve, it requires people who attain great leadership qualities. The success of an organization depends on employees that can inspire people around them to achieve greatness and deliver quality care to the patients. Being in the healthcare industry, we have seen many changes recently.
