In health care today, leaders are important to ensure that the system continues to move forward, to improve, and survive with all of the changes that are occurring at an alarming rate. A leader, according to Sullivan (2013) “is anyone who uses interpersonal skills to influence others to accomplish a specific goal” (p. 41). Leadership can be in a formal or informal within an organization depending on their position within an organization (Sullivan, 2013). For this particular assignment, this writer performed an interview with the Vice President of Finance, Physician Services, and Business Development of our local hospital.

With the help of his predecessor, who planned on retiring in a few years and the hospital board of directors’ approval, K.W. took the assistant vice president of finance position to learn the “ropes” of the Vice President of the hospital (K. Wilcox, personal communication, March 24, 2016). After 5 years of working for GRMC, K.W. promoted to the Vice President of the hospital (K. Wilcox, personal communication, March 24, 2016).
Description of a Leader and Philosophy of Leadership
K.W. reports that there are many ways to describe a leader; however, the most important one in the health care industry would be flexibility (K. Wilcox, personal communication, March 24, 2016). K.W. believes that one must be able to adjust to each and every situation according to what is needed; sometimes you must be passionate and show this where at other times you must be reserved (K. Wilcox, personal communication, March 24, 2016). He states that you must display courage through the tough decisions that present, remaining humble enough to admit when you do not know the answers (K. Wilcox, personal communication, March 24, 2016). He believes that leadership is like any other skill, just like in nursing you are taught how to start an IV, it is a skill that is learned and developed overtime (K.
