Another challenge to effective communication is part time employment. Waiting for a response to something urgent, when the person concerned is not back at work for 2 days is frustrating. It also means effective handover periods and staff communication is essential.
Communication is the way we portray and process our thoughts. This could be through speech, messages, telephone, email, sign language, body language, facial expressions and all of which are equally as effective and nurtured to each recipient. Within our nursery setting we firstly communicate through posters and hand-outs (prospectuses) that you receive upon first entry of the nursery. We have a mission statement clearly written on the wall for people to read as they come in and a code of conduct for people to follow.

Listening is a profession setting allows us to form relationships with other coworkers, understand the needs and wants of others, properly understand the tasks at hand, and be able to differentiate between the levels of communication other have. Listening enables us to be able to perform better in a job and understand what others expect of you. Some significant barriers that are apparent in a communication setting would be noise, the inability to function as an active listener, and the failure to limit distractions. Many times we are given the chance to properly react to these barriers. By doing so, we allow ourselves to be much more effective in the work environment and allow others to be effective as
Visual factors, lighting condition- light should be on the talkers face, unless they have sight problems then some people react badly to having the light shined in their eyes so maybe a dim light or a light which lights up the room but not directly in their face. Interfering objects- visual noise, try to keep noise to a minimum as sometimes this can distract people and even make it hard for the individual to hear especially if they have poor hearing, in the home I work we use walkie talkies to communicate to other staff, when in with a resident the noise and interference from the radios can be very loud and distracts you, so I try to cover over the radio to quieten it down so the resident can still hear me and understand; you can also turn the volume down whist in with the resident. Within nursing, there is a very delicate balance between a nurse and her patient that must be maintained if the patient is to receive the care that he or she is entitled to receive. The patient must feel comfortable trusting his nurse to hear his needs and respond to them appropriately and in order for this to be the case, the nurse must first provide therapeutic communication effective enough to elicit such a response in her patient. There are both verbal and non-verbal components within the nurse-patient relationship. These components greatly influence how a nurse and patient will relate to each other and, ultimately, greatly influence the care that the patient receives.

In other words, listening is not always easy and being a good listener is all about developing listening skills. To receive messages appropriately we have to listen actively. Active listening can be broken down into three important skills; first of all you have to reflect the feelings that the person is communicating, secondly reflect the content that they are communicating and finally ask good, meaningful questions.
Communication is a way of life for sociable organisms on earth. There are many forms of communication and several are used without saying a word or making a sound.
