There are mainly four types of blood groups: A,B, AB, and O, based on the presence of antigens and antibodies present in the red blood cells. A blood group has A antigen; B blood group has B antigen; AB blood group has A and B antigens; and there are no antigens present in O blood group.

There is another blood group system known as the Rh system. If Rh antigen is present on the surface of red blood cells, then the individual is Rh+; if Rh antigen is absent, then the person is Rh-.
