Chapter 10, Problem 10.1P

Refer to the rectangular combined footing in Figure 10.1, with Q1 = 100 kip and Q2 = 150 kip. The distance between the two column loads L3 = 13.5 ft. The proximity of the property line at the left edge requires that L2 = 3.0 ft. The net allowable soil pressure is 2500 lb/ft2. Determine the breadth and length of a rectangular combined footing.

Expert Solution & Answer

To determine

Find the length and breadth of the combined footing.

Answer to Problem 10.1P

The length of the combined footing is 22.2ft_.

The width of the combined footing is 4.50ft_.

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

The distance between two column loads (L3) is 13.5ft.

The column loads (Q1) and (Q2) are 100 kip and 150 kip.

The distance (L2) is 3.0ft.

The net allowable soil pressure (qall(net)) is 2,500lb/ft2.

Calculation:

Find the location of the resultant of the column loads (X) using the relation:

X=Q2L3Q1+Q2

Substitute 150 kip for Q2, 13.5 ft for L3, and 100 kip for Q1.

X=150kip×13.5ft150kip+100kip=8.1ft

Find the length of the foundation (L) using the relation:

L=2(L2+X)

Substitute 3 ft for L2 and 8.1 ft for X.

L=2(3ft+8.1ft)=22.2ft

Therefore, the length of the combined footing is 22.2ft_.

Find the length (L1) using the relation:

L1=LL2L3

Substitute 22.2 ft for L, 3 ft for L2, and 13.5 ft for L3.

L1=22.2ft3ft13.5ft=5.7ft

Find the area of the combined footing (A) using the relation:

A=Q1+Q2qall(net)

Substitute 100 kip for Q1, 150 kip for Q2, and 2,500lb/ft2 for qall(net).

A=100kip+150kip2,500lb/ft2=250kip×1,000lb1kip2,500lb/ft2=100ft2

Find the width of the rectangular footing (B) using the relation:

B=AL

Substitute 100ft2 for A and 22.2 ft for L.

B=100ft222.2ft=4.50ft

Therefore, the width of the combined footing is 4.50ft_.
