Interpretation:
Synthetic intermediates A and B has to be drawn.
Concept Introduction:
Conversion of alcohol into haloalkane:
Conversion of primary and secondary alcohols to Chloroalkane is thionyl chloride. The reaction is carried out in the presence of base such as pyridine or trimethylamine.
The reaction of an alcohol with thionyl chloride is the formation of an alkyl Chlorosulfite that converts hydroxide ion (poor leaving group) into Chlorosulfite (good leaving group). Nucleophilic displacement of this leaving group gives product.
Leaving group: Leaving group can be any groups or atoms that get detached from either neutral or charged organic compounds. The stability of the leaving group is to stabilize the electron density that results from heterolysis cleavage of bond.

- ¨ What other types of analgesics are on the market? How does their action compare with aspirin and why are these alternative drugs necessary? Discuss the differences among the following compounds by drawing their structures: Acetylsalicylic acid, Acetaminophen (Paracetamol), Ibuprofen, Paracetamol and Phenacetin.arrow_forwardWhat chemical test will you use to differentiate acetanilide from aniline?arrow_forwardIn the 1880's, Acetanilide, sold under the name Antifebrin, was widely used as a pain reliever and fever reducer. However, it had many adverse side effects, including cyanosis as a result of methemoglobinemia. The toxic side effects were the result of a small portion of acetanilide being hydrolyzed to aniline. Acetanilide was discontinued and replaced with phenacetin. Later studies show that both acetanilide and phenacetin are metabolized to acetaminophen. This metabolite, which we know as Tylenol, is responsible for the analgesic and antipyretic properties. Part 1: Show a detailed arrow pushing mechanism of the acid catalyzed hydrolysis of acetanilide to aniline Part 2: Propose a synthesis of Acetaminophen from phenol NH NH NH Phenacetin inophen Acetanilide Attach File Browse Local Files Browse Content Collectionarrow_forward
