Chapter 10, Problem 13PT3
To determine

To identify the 95% confidence interval that would estimate the true difference in the proportion of Republicans in New York and California:

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 13PT3

  (c) (0.44-0.47)±1.96(0.44)(0.56)200+(0.47)(0.53)300

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

  n1=200               x1=88n2=300               x2=141

Where n1&n2 are number of voters in New York City and California City respectively

Also x1&x2 are number if Republicans in New York City and California City

respectively

The formula for 95% confidence interval for true difference in the population proportion (P1P2) is as follows:

  (p1p2)±Zα2(p1)(1p1)n1+(p2)(1p2)n2

Where p1&p2 are sample proportions.

  p1=x1n1 and p2=x2n2

Calculation:

For the given problem p1&p2 are obtained as below:

  p1=88200=0.44p2=141300=0.47

The critical value of Z at 5% level of significance is Zα/2=Z0.025=1.96

Therefore from the formula the confidence interval will be,

  (0.44-0.47)±1.96(0.44)(0.56)200+(0.47)(0.53)300

Hence 95% confidence interval to estimate the true differences in the proportion of Republicans in the two cities is (0.44-0.47)±1.96(0.44)(0.56)200+(0.47)(0.53)300
