Concept explainers
To determine: Whether the compound ‘ganglioside’ could be a glycerophospholipid.
Introduction:
Glycerophospholipids are the molecules in which two fatty acids are joined to the first and second carbon atom by an ester linkage, and a polar group is attached to the third carbon by through a phosphodiester linkage. Glycerophospholipids are the derivatives of the compound known as phosphatidic acid.
To determine: Whether the compound ‘sphingomyelin’ could be a glycerophospholipid.
Introduction:
Glycerophospholipids are the derivatives of the compound known as phosphatidic acid. Diacylglycerols are the most common glycerolphopholids that are attached to a head-group alcohol through a phosphodiester bond. Examples of glycerophospholipids are phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, and cardiolipin.
