Chapter 11, Problem 11.3SE

Explain a direct material variance (Learning Objective 2)

A Cadbury Creme Egg is an egg-shaped chocolate candy that weighs about 35 grams, or a little more than 1.2 ounces. It is filled with a white fondant and a smaller amount of yellow fondant, meant to mimic an actual egg. (Fondant is a type of sugar syrup.) In the United States. Cadbury Creme Eggs are marketed and distributed by The Hershey Company. The Creme Eggs are produced by Cadbury Adams in Canada and by Cadbury UK in the United Kingdom In the UK factory, 1.5 million Creme Eggs are manufactured per day. Creme Eggs are sold every year from New Year’s Day until Easter.

In 2015, Cadbury changed its formula for the eggs by replacing its Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate with “standard cocoa mix chocolate.” The standard chocolate is a less expensive ingredient than the Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate. The company assured customers that the taste of the Creme Eggs would not change.

Consumers reacted negatively to the recipe change. Sales of Cadbury Creme Eggs have fallen by more than $14 million since the chocolate substitution; this drop has been speculated to have been caused by the change in the recipe.

Assuming that Cadbury uses standard costing in its manufacturing operations, what variance would have been impacted by the decrease in the cost of the chocolate used in the Cadbury eggs? Would this variance have been favorable or unfavorable? What position or department within Cadbury would have been responsible for that variance?

In an effort to raise the demand for reading tests, managers are planning to lower the price from $36 per test to $20 per test, the current price of the math test. They believe that doing so will increase the demand for reading tests to 60,000. Prepare a contribution format income statement reflecting Abado’s new pricing and demand structure.   Abado Profiles provides testing services to school districts that wish to assess students’ reading and mathematical abilities. Last year Abado evaluated 60,000 math tests and 20,000 reading tests. An income statement for last year follows.     Math Testing   Reading Testing         Total   Per Unit   Total   Per Unit   Total Company Sales revenue   $1,200,000   $20   $720,000   $36   $1,920,000 Variable expenses   840,000   14   360,000   18   1,200,000 Contribution margin   $360,000   $6   $360,000   $18   720,000 Fixed expenses                   360,000 Operating income                   $360,000
Dog Bone Bakery, which bakes dog treats, makes a special biscuit for dogs. Each biscuit uses 0.75 cup of pure semolina flour. They buy 4,100 cups of flour at $0.50 per cup. They use 3,587.5 cups of flour to make 4,800 biscuits. The standard cost per cup of flour is $0.48. A. What are the direct materials price variance, the direct materials quantity variances, and the total direct materials cost variance? Round your answers to two decimals. Enter all amounts as positive numbers. B. What is the standard cost per biscuit for the semolina flour? Round your answer to four decimals.
Sole Purpose Shoe Company is owned and operated by Sarah Charles. The company manufactures casual shoes, with manufacturing facilities in your state. Sarah began the business this year, and while she has a great deal of experience in manufacturing popular and comfortable shoes, she needs some help in evaluating her results for the year, and asks for your help. Sarah’s first questions for you have to do with the general ideas and terminology used to evaluate variances. Provide answers to the following questions (1)-(3). 1. Why might Sarah want to use standard costs to compare with her actual costs? A) Management can evaluate the differences between standard costs and actual costs to focus on correcting the cost variances.   B) Standard costs give management a cost structure for products that is applicable for the entire life of the business.   C) Standard costs allow management to motivate employees by comparing their performance to what it would be under perfect…
