Concept explainers
The four graphs from part C that show relative intensity occurs angle for two slits are given below. In each case.
• Clearly label (1) the interference minima that arc closest go the center of the pattern and (2) the diffraction minima that are closet to the center of the pattern.
• Sketch the graph of relative intensity that would result if one of the slits were covered.
For each of the four cases, is your relative intensity graph consistent with the minima that you identified? If not, resolve any inconsistencies.

- State one feature by which the phenomenon of interference can be distinguished from that of diffraction. A parallel beam of light of wavelength 600 nm is incident normally on a slit of width ‘a’. If the distance between the slits and the screen is 0.8 m and the distance of 2nd order maximum from the centre of the screen is. 15 mm, calculate the width of the slit.arrow_forwardConsider a single slit being illuminated by light with wavelength λ. Part (a) What is the minimum width, w1min, expressed as a multiple of λ, for which the slit produces the first minimum? Part (b) What is its minimum width of the slit, w50,min, if it produces 50 minima? Again, express this in multiples of λ. Part (c) What if it produces 1000 minima?arrow_forwardplease explain mathematically(using equations) when the number of slits increases, what happens to the diffraction patternarrow_forward
- A radio transmitting station operating at a frequency of 125 MHz has two identical antennas that radiate in phase. Antenna B is 9.00 m to the right of antenna A. Consider point P between the antennas and along the line connecting them, a horizontal distance x to the right of the antenna. For what values of x will constructive interference occur at point P? Express your answers in meters and in ascending order separated by comas.arrow_forwardA. It appears that there should be a bright fringe at the location of point D. Why isn’tthere? Explain The previous figure is also labeled with points A and B which are at the locations of maximaand points C and D which are at the locations of minimum For Questions b and c below, you will need to discuss whether each of those minima/maxima stays at the same location, moves to the left or moves to the right and then explain your answers for each B. The slit width is slightly decreased C. The slit separation is slightly decreased.arrow_forwardthe central part of the interference pattern for a pure wavelength of red light projected onto a double slit. The pattern is actually a combination of single slit and double slit interference. Note that the bright spots are evenly spaced. Isthis a double slit or single slit characteristic? Note that some of the bright spots are dim on either side of the center. Is this asingle slit or double slit characteristic? Which is smaller, the slit width or the separation between slits? Explain your responsesarrow_forward
- 'In an experiment the first-order maximums are measured a distance of 8 cm apart from scattering due to a diffraction grating placed 70 cm away from the screen; a) If the diffraction grating has 880 lines per centimeter what is the wavelength of light? b) If light from this laser is used in single slit diffraction experiment at what angles would you expect to see minimums appear (please give 3 different positive angles) If the slit width is 1Oµm?'arrow_forwardRaise your hand and hold it flat. Think of the space between your index finger and your middle finger as one slit and think of the space between middle finger and ring finger as a second slit. (a) Consider the interference resulting from sending coherent visible light perpendicularly through thispair of openings. Compute an order-of-magnitude estimate for the angle between adjacent zones of constructive interference. (b) To make the angles in the interference pattern easy to measure with a plastic protractor, you should use an electromagnetic wave with frequency of what order of magnitude? (c) How is this wave classified on the electromagnetic spectrum?arrow_forwardExplain in great detail, the two point source interference pattern and provide a diagram to further convey the concept.arrow_forward
