One of the critical moments early on in the The Lord of the Rings trilogy is the meeting in Rivendell to decide who should take the One Ring to Mordor. Gimli the Dwarf won’t hear of an Elf doing it, whereas Legolas (who is an Elf) feels similarly about Gimli. Boromir (who is a Man) is opposed to either of them taking charge of the Ring. And then there is Frodo the Hobbit, who has the weakest desire to take the Ring but knows that someone must throw it into the fires of Mordor. In modeling this scenario as a game, assume there are four players: Boromir, Frodo, Gimli, and Legolas. (There were more, of course, including Aragorn and Elrond, but let’s keep it simple.) Each of them has a preference ordering, shown in the following table, as to who should take on the task of carrying the One Ring.
Of the three non-Hobbits, each prefers to take on the task himself. Each would prefer that other than themselves and Frodo, no one should take the Ring. As for Frodo, he doesn’t really want to do it…

Malaria Eradication Back on the Table In response to the Gates Malaria Forum in October 2007, countries are debating the pros and cons of eradication. Dr. Arata Kochi of the World Health Organization believes that with enough money malaria cases could be cut by 90 percent, but it would be very expensive to eliminate the remaining 10 percent of cases, so countries should not strive to eradicate malaria. Make a graph with the percentage of malaria cases eliminated on the x -axis and the marginal cost and marginal benefit of driving down malaria cases on the y -axis. On your graph: (i) Draw a marginal cost curve and marginal benefit curve that are consistent with Dr. Kochi’s opinion. (ii) Identify the quantity of malaria eradicated that achieves allocative efficiency.

- The results expressed in the Bertrand model are often referred to as the “Bertrand Paradox.” Why do you think this result is considered a paradox?arrow_forwardRoyal Dutch Shell has been doing business in Nigeria since the 1920s, and has announced new plans to develop oil and gas projects there. However, over the years Shell has confronted a series of episodes involving country risk. Shell’s operations are centred in Nigeria’s Ogoni region, where the local citizens have protested Shell’s drilling and refining activities, which are said to spoil the natural environment and reduce the amount of available farmland. Protestors also accuse Shell of extracting wealth from the region without adequately compensating local residents. Ogonis sabotaged Shell’s operations to such an extent that the firm suspended parts of its Nigerian operations. Shell also came under pressure to divest its Nigerian operations and to pay reparations to the locals. What proactive steps can Shell take to anticipate future country risk? What should Shell do to deal more effectively with country risk?arrow_forwardWhat is the Samuelson Rule? - Which of the below statements DOES NOT capture Economics? Group of answer choices Economics tells us that there is no theoretical limit to how well we can live or how widely our wealth can spread. The economic prosperity of an economy requires that every person in that economy have a Ph.D. degree. Wheelan argues that the free market system does not make poverty inevitable. Economic development is not a zero-sum game. Even the most prosperous economy will contiue to require certain manual tasks that do not require advanced college degrees. These tasks cannot be replaced with automation. Expecting Ph.D.s or people with professional education to do such tasks will have a high opportunity cost.arrow_forwardIn 2018, a wind farm developer was ordered by the Iowa state appeals court to dismantle its newly constructed wind turbines after nearby residents filed a lawsuit complaining about the loud noise and visual impact of the turbines. The one-way price charged by both firms was $142 on weekdays and $92 on weekends, with lower off-peak advance purchase fares. In September 1991 Delta increased the per-trip shuttle mileage given to members of the Delta frequent-flier pro- gram from 1,000 to 2,000 miles, even though actual mileage from New York to either Boston or Washington is about 200 miles. Moreover, Delta also offered an extra 1,000 miles to frequent fliers who made a round-trip on the same day, raising a possible day’s total to 5,000 miles. Almost simultaneously, Trump changed the frequent-flier mileage it gave shuttle passengers. (It participated in the One Pass frequent-flier program with Continental Airlines and some foreign carriers.) What sorts of changes do you think Trump made? Whyarrow_forward

One of these is the Standard model, while the other is the Deluxe model. The profit per unit on the Standard model is $60, while the profit per unit on the Deluxe model is $40. The Standard model requires 20 minutes of assembly time, while the Deluxe model requires 35 minutes of assembly time. The Standard model requires 10 minutes of inspection time, while the Deluxe model requires 15 minutes of inspection time. The company must fill an order for 6 Deluxe models. Each has an army of 100 zombies and must decide how to allocate them to battle each of the other two players’ armies. Three simultaneous battles are occurring: one between Andy and Brad, one between Andy and Carly, and one between Brad and Carly. Let Ab denote how many zombie soldiers Andy allocates to his battle with Brad, with the remaining 100 - Ab soldiers in Andy’s zombie army assigned to the battle with Carly. Bc denotes the number of zombie soldiers that Brad allocates to his battle with Carly, and 100 - Bc zombies go to his battle with Andy. Ca is the the number of zombie soldiers that Carly allocates to the battle with Andy, and 100 - Ca in her battle with Brad. To see how payoffs are determined, consider Andy. If Ab > 100 - Bc, so that Andy has more zombies than Brad in the Andy-Brad battle, then Andy wins the battle and receives w points where w > 2. However, even a single agent economy such as this one has all of the features any economy would, such as supply and demand curves, and equilibrium prices and quantities. Miranda plays many roles in this economy, as all of the profit earned by Miranda the producer is transmitted to Miranda the shareholder, which represents additional income that Miranda the consumer can spend on fish in addition to the labor income earned by Miranda the worker. (a) Suppose Miranda earns both labor income and profit, so that pq = wl + π(p). Rewrite her utility maximization problem and find the new demand for fish qd(p) and leisure r(p). (b) Find the equilibrium price p* and quantity q* of fish. (c) Find the equilibrium hours of labor l* and labor r*.arrow_forward
