The flux used in the welding process is prone to picking up moisture present in the surrounding atmosphere. It is advised that the electrodes should be placed and stored in the dry and moisture free area under adequate temperature conditions. The flux material helps to clean the surface before the joining process by removing or reducing the oxides formed on the surface. Flux must help in removing the oxides forming on the surface. The oxides may form due to heating the parts involved in joining.

Due to very high temperatures involved in the welding process, the moisture present in the atmospheric air breaks down in hydrogen and oxygen molecules. The hydrogen may get absorbed by the molten metal where it can cause cracking after the welding process completes. The oxygen so obtained may also be absorbed by the molten metal and becomes the cause of forms of oxides in the metal.
