A pan balance is made up of a rigid, massless rod with a hanging pan attached at each end. The rod is supported at and free to rotate about a point not at its center. It is balanced by unequal masses placed in the two pans. When an unknown mass m is placed in the left pan, it is balanced by a miss m1, placed in the right pan; when the mass m is placed in the right pan, it is balanced by a mass m2 in the left pan. Show that

- A wooden door 2.1 m high and 0.90 m wide is hung by two hinges 1.8 m apart. The lower hinge is 15 cm above the bottom of the door. The center of mass of the door is at its geometric center, and the weight of the door is 260 N, which is supported equally by both hinges. Find the horizontal force exerted by each hinge on the door.arrow_forwardA 60 kg uniform board 2.4 m long is supported by a pivot d=80 cm from the left end. How far from the left end should a 41.6 kg child sit so that the board is balanced? Answer: cmarrow_forwardA uniform 20 kg wooden plank is supported by a fulcrum at the midpoint. From the fulcrum, a 30 kg boy is positioned at some distance who is balanced by an 80 kg man positioned 1.5 m from it. What is the approximate force exerted by the fulcrum? 1070 N 130 N 1270 N 1200 Narrow_forward
- A horizontal meter stick supported at the 50-cm mark has a mass of 0.2 kg hanging from it at the 12-cm mark and a 0.4 kg mass hanging from it at the 59-cm mark. Determine the position on the meter stick at which one would hang a third mass of 0.5 kg to keep the meter stick balanced. The answer is 58.arrow_forwardA 60 kg uniform board 2.4 m long is supported by a pivot d=80 cm from the left end. How far from the left end should a 38 kg child sit so that the board is balanced?arrow_forwarduniform plank is 6.0 m long and weighs 80 N. It is balanced on a sawhorse at its center. An additional 160 N weight is now placed on the left end of the plank. The keep the plank balanced, it must be moved what distance to the left?arrow_forward
- A seesaw is a flat board that is balanced on a fulcrum (point of balance). When the weight at either end is equal, the seesaw is balanced and both ends are at the same height. When weight is added to either side, the balance will tilt in that direction. To prevent the balance from tipping, the location of the fulcrum must be moved to accommodate the difference in weights placed on each end. A playground equipment company wants to produce a seesaw that will be perfectly balanced when an adult and a child are on either end. The company estimates that an adult, on average, weighs four times as much as a child. The length of the seesaw is 10 feet. Object 1 on the beam has a weight of 20 N and is placed 3 m away from the wall. Object 2 has a weight of 10 N and is 8 m away from the wall. If a wire attached to the beam at a point 7m away from the wall keeps the system equilibrium as shown in the figure, what is the tension of the wire?arrow_forwardA tire, which is mounted on a car, has a radius of 0.23m0.23m. A nail with a mass of 11.4g11.4g is stuck in the tread of the tire, and it is held there with a maximum frictional force of 0.53N0.53N. The car has been elevated on a mechanic lift so that the tire is no longer in contact with the pavement. Part (a) What is the tire tread’s lowest tangential speed, in meters per second, at which the nail will pull free from the tire? (How does gravity affect the net force on the nail at various positions in the rotation of the tire.) Part (b) At what tangential speed, in meters per second, would the nail pull free when it is at the top of the tire? (This is a mildly silly question because the nail would have already pulled free at some other point in the rotation.)arrow_forward

Find I for the rod about an axis perpendicular to the rod and through its center. Repeat for a parallel axis through the wood end.arrow_forwardA ruler with the length of 100 cm and mass of 100g has the pivot point at 35 Cm.
