Chapter 13, Problem 7Q
To determine

To Explain: The change in the expansion coefficient with change in the length feet or millimetres instead of meters.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 7Q

The value of thermal expansion coefficient will remain same as it is independent of length of the materials.

Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

The thermal expansion is the material property.

Write the expression for the change in length.

  ΔL=αL0ΔT

In this relation :

  ΔL is change in the length

  α is coefficient of thermal expansion

  ΔT is the change in temperature.

  L0 is the initial length.

As the expansion coefficient has the unit C°1 so it is independent of the length of the materials. The value of thermal expansion coefficient will be same whether we use the length in meters, millimetres or feet.

Conclusion:

The value of thermal expansion coefficient will remain same as it is independent of length of the materials.
