Sly Bailey, the Trinity Mirror Chief Executive, sought to boost revenues of the Daily Mirror in 2004 by increasing the price of the tabloid newspaper by 3p, from 32p to 35p. The move is a sharp U-turn of the policy of Philip Graf, her predecessor, who tried to boost Daily Mirror circulation by cutting the cover price, triggering a price war with its rivals The Sun and the Daily Star. Ms. Bailey ended the price war as soon as she took over at Trinity Mirror in 2003. The Daily Mirror will now cost 5p more than the The Sun, which is owned by News International, parent company of the Times. It appears that The Sun has no immediate plans to increase its price. The Daily Mirror last increases its price in September 1999 but the tabloid newspaper market in the UK is fiercely competitive and it's not clear what the effect on its circulation will be."
Can you help me in stating if the change in quantity demanded of daily mirror/change in the price of sun?
Thank you.
Harriet McNeil, proprietor of McNeil's Auto Mall, believes that it is good business for her automobile dealership to have more customers on the lot than can be served, as she believes this creates an impression that demand for the automobiles on her lot is high. However, she also understands that if there are far more customers on the lot than can be served by her salespeople, her dealership may lose sales to customers who become frustrated and leave without making a purchase.
Ms. McNeil is primarily concerned about the staffing of salespeople on her lot on Saturday mornings (8:00 a.m. to noon), which are the busiest time of the week for McNeil's Auto Mall. On Saturday mornings, an average of 6.8 customers arrive per hour. The customers arrive randomly at a constant rate throughout the morning, and a salesperson spends an average of one hour with a customer. Ms. McNeil's experience has led her to conclude that if there are two more customers on her lot than can be served at any time…
After moving into Schine, Dunkin’ reported that their (donut) market equilibrium occurs when 450 donuts are sold at a price of $1.50 per donut. They also reported that the producer will supply no donuts when the price is $0.50 and the customers will demand no donuts at $2.00, what are that supply and demand equations, assuming that both are linear

- In 1998, five companies were found guilty because of their actions to raise the price of an animal feed additive, lysine, by limiting its supply. Explain why they would engage such a practice with the use of a graph. Assume that the demand for lysine is inelastic in the short term.arrow_forwardU.S. food markets consumers viewed beef as a normal good from 1960-1976, but viewed it as an inferior good after that point. This type of change is not abnormal, in that as average household incomes rise, preferences might change. For instance, as households move from poor to middle-class, their consumption of beef might increase. However, as households move from middle- class to upper-middle-class, they might choose to purchase more exotic foods products. Assuming you are a beef producer in 1983, what will happen if incomes continue to increase? a. The marginal cost of beef will increase. b. The marginal cost of beef will decrease. c. The demand for beef will increase. d. The demand for beef will decrease.arrow_forwardSuppose that Charles and Dina are the only consumers of scented candles in a particular market. The following table shows their annual demand schedules: On the following graph, plot Charles’s demand for scented candles using the green points (triangle symbol). Next, plot Dina’s demand for scented candles using the purple points (diamond symbol). Finally, plot the market demand for scented candles using the blue points (circle symbol). Note: Line segments will automatically connect the points. Remember to plot from left to right.arrow_forward
- When the Covid-19 pandemic hits, chicken sellers are likely to raise chicken prices due to rising costs. The government had to act by setting a ceiling price for the supply of chicken in the market. The original price of chicken is RM6 per kilo. At that time, it is assumed that the equilibrium quantity is 1000 chickens. But the government has set the ceiling price at RM8 only. Draw and briefly explain a curve that illustrates the situation where ceiling pricing takes place in the sale of chicken in the market.arrow_forwardViking InterWorks is one of many manufacturers that supplies memory products to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of desktop systems. The CEO recently read van article in a trade publication that reported the projected demand for desktop systems to be Qddesktop = 1,600 −2Pdesktop + .6M (in millions of units), where Pdesktop is the price of a desktop system and M is consumer income. The same article reported that the incomes of the desktop systems’ primary consumer demographic would increase 4.2 percent this year to $61,300 and that the selling price of a desktop would decrease to $980, both of which the CEO viewed favorably for Viking. In a related article, the CEO read that the upcoming year’s projected demand for 512 MB desktop memory modules is Qdmemory = 11,200 − 100Pmemory − 2Pdesktop (in thousands of units), where Pmemory is the market price for a 512 MB memory module and Pdesktop is the selling price of a desktop system. According to the midpoints formula, the price elasticity of demand for oranges between point X and point Y is approximately ______ , which suggests that the demand for oranges is ________ between points X and Y.arrow_forwardSuppose that you are a staff economist with an economic consulting firm. The operator of a local harbour has commissioned your firm to do a market analysis of the demand for berths (parking spaces) for boats. Your firm finds that the price elasticity of demand for berths is –0.8. If the price of a berth in the area decreases by 6%, how will the quantity of berths that people demand change? The number of berths demanded will: Increase by 0.8% Decrease by 7.5% Increase by 6% Increase by 4.8%arrow_forward

Using the graph, complete the table that follows by indicating whether each statement is true or false. (Hint: You can display the coordinates by clicking on the points.)
