Fuel cell is to be defined and how it is different from a battery is to be explained.

Concept introduction:

Fuel cell is an electrochemical cell and it converts the potential energy into electricity through an electrochemical reaction of hydrogen fuel with oxygen.

Oxidation is the addition of an electronegative element or the removal of an electropositive element in a chemical reaction.

Reduction is the addition of an electropositive element or the removal of an electronegative element in a chemical reaction.

Electrolysis is the process in which a reaction takes place at electrodes. The positively charged electrode is called anode. The negatively charged electrode is called cathode. During electrolysis, reduction takes place at the cathode and oxidation takes place at the anode.

Explanation of Solution

The fuel cell is a device that generates electricity by the chemical reaction between a source fuel and an oxidant. It produces electricity without combustion of fuels because electricity is generated by the chemical reaction occurring at electrodes. In the fuel cell, hydrogen enters at the anode and oxygen enters at the cathode and combine to form water.

H2 half-cell reaction will occur as oxidation at the anode. Hydrogen gas is oxidized to water.

2H2(g)+4OH(l)4H2O(aq)+4e

O2 half-cell reaction will occur as reduction at the cathode. Oxygen gas is reduced to hydroxide ion.

2O2(g)+2H2O(l)+4eOH(aq)

Adding two half reactions gives the overall cell reaction as follows
